Marcus spent the next two days helping investigators reconstruct the outage.
He didn’t ask for money.
He didn’t ask for a job.
He simply worked.
By Wednesday morning, the company recovered most of the missing funds.
The final loss was under a million dollars.
But the damage to Sterling’s reputation remained.
Avery called Marcus into her office.
“Sit.”
He did.
She placed an envelope on the desk.
Marcus looked at it.
“What is this?”
“Your forty dollars.”
He smiled.
“You found it.”
Avery laughed.
“Yes.”
She pushed the envelope toward him.
“Plus compensation.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t want it.”
“Why?”
“I did what I was hired to do.”
Avery looked at him.
“That’s exactly why I’m offering it.”
She explained that Marcus’s evidence had prevented a $12 million insurance fraud.
He had also prevented further damage to the company.
Then she offered him a position.
Chief Infrastructure Advisor.
Marcus stared.
“I can’t work full-time.”
“Why?”
“My daughter.”
Avery nodded.
“Flexible schedule.”
Marcus hesitated.
“What about my other work?”
“You can keep it.”
“And the salary?”
Avery gave him a number.
Marcus almost laughed.
“That’s more than I’ve made in three years.”
“You earned it.”
Marcus looked down.
He thought about the $40.
Then about the night he repaired the cooling system while everyone else had gone home.
He accepted.
But he had one condition.
“Pay contractors on time.”
Avery smiled.
“Agreed.”
“And don’t reject invoices because they’re small.”
Avery laughed.
“Agreed.”
Marcus stood.
As he walked toward the door, Avery called:
“Marcus.”
He turned.
“Thank you.”
He nodded.
