They Refused to Pay a Single Dad $40—3 Days Later It Cost Them $12 Million
Chapter 5
Monday morning, Sterling Dynamics’ headquarters looked like a war zone.
Employees rushed through the lobby.
Lawyers arrived.
Executives shouted into phones.
Security guards checked every badge.
Marcus stood outside.
He hadn’t been invited.
But he knew he needed to speak.
A security officer approached.
“You can’t come inside.”
“I’m here because of the cooling system.”
“Leave your contact information.”
“I have evidence.”
The guard hesitated.
Before he could respond, a woman’s voice came from behind.
“Let him through.”
Marcus turned.
Avery Sterling.
CEO of Sterling Dynamics.
She was thirty-eight, sharp, controlled, and feared throughout the company.
Marcus recognized her immediately.
Avery looked at him.
“You’re the technician.”
“Yes.”
“Come with me.”
They entered a conference room.
Richard Sloan was already there.
His expression changed when he saw Marcus.
“You again?”
Marcus placed the printed report on the table.
“The system failure wasn’t accidental.”
Richard laughed.
“Of course it wasn’t.”
Marcus looked at Avery.
“Your backup cooling circuit was manually disabled before the failure.”
Avery read the report.
Richard interrupted.
“This man is an outside contractor.”
Marcus turned toward him.
“I was also the person who repaired the system.”
Richard slammed his hand on the table.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.”
“No.”
Marcus opened his phone.
“I took photographs.”
Avery studied the images.
Richard became silent.
Marcus zoomed in on the reflection.
“The person standing behind me had a Sterling badge.”
Avery looked at Richard.
“Who had access?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Avery’s expression hardened.
“Richard?”
He finally spoke.
“Security has hundreds of employees.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not to that room.”
Avery looked at him.
“How much did they refuse to pay you?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Forty dollars.”
Avery looked stunned.
“Forty?”
Marcus nodded.
Richard looked embarrassed.
“It’s company policy.”
Avery stared at him.
“Who approved that policy?”
Richard didn’t respond.
Avery stood.
“Find every access record from Friday.”
Marcus knew something had changed.
For the first time, someone powerful was listening.
But three hours later, Avery would discover something far worse.
The person who accessed the server room wasn’t a random employee.
It was someone sitting inside that very building.
