They Humiliated Her Boyfriend — Not Knowing She Owned the Hotel

Chapter 10

Michael Bennett was not dead.

Olivia spent the night reviewing old family records.

Her father had always said Michael died after disappearing at sea.

There had been no body.

No funeral.

No confirmed identification.

Just a report.

And now someone claiming to be Michael had called her.

James traced the phone signal.

It lasted only eleven seconds.

Long enough to locate an area near the private marina.

Olivia, Ethan, and James drove there before dawn.

The marina was almost empty.

An old warehouse stood at the end of the dock.

They entered carefully.

Inside, they found computers.

Documents.

Cash.

Photographs.

One wall contained a complete organizational chart of the hotel.

At the center was Victoria.

Below her were Daniel, members of the board, several suppliers, and three offshore companies.

At the top was one name.

MICHAEL BENNETT.

Ethan stared.

“He’s alive.”

Olivia nodded.

Then a voice echoed through the warehouse.

“Yes.”

They turned.

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Olivia froze.

Michael Bennett looked older than the photographs.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A scar across one cheek.

“You look just like your mother,” he said.

Olivia stared.

“You ruined my family.”

Michael smiled.

“No. Your family ruined itself.”

“You stole from us.”

“I built the system.”

“You nearly killed my father.”

“I never touched your father.”

“You destroyed his life.”

Michael shrugged.

“He made choices.”

Ethan stepped forward.

Michael looked at him.

“And you must be the boyfriend.”

“You’ve been watching us.”

“For months.”

“Why?”

Michael smiled.

“Because Olivia is unpredictable.”

Olivia said, “You wanted the hotel.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“The network.”

He pointed to the files.

“The hotel was merely one doorway.”

“What network?”

“Luxury properties. Construction companies. Shipping. Investment funds.”

Ethan understood.

“You used the hotel to move money.”

Michael nodded.

“Money that belongs to people powerful enough to erase problems.”

Olivia stared.

“And Victoria?”

“Useful.”

“Daniel?”

“Disposable.”

“Marcus?”

“Collateral.”

Ethan looked at Olivia.

“Then why frame me?”

Michael smiled.

“Because people believe what they already want to believe.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

Michael walked closer.

“They saw a wealthy woman with a poor boyfriend.”

He laughed.

“They assumed you were being exploited.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“You underestimated him.”

Michael looked at Ethan.

“Perhaps.”

Then a noise came from outside.

Police sirens.

James smiled.

“I sent everything to federal investigators.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“You won’t get away.”

He grabbed a folder and ran.

Ethan chased him.

Michael sprinted toward the dock.

Ethan caught him near the edge.

Michael swung.

Ethan blocked the punch.

The two men struggled.

Michael was stronger than he looked.

He shoved Ethan into a railing.

Olivia screamed.

Ethan grabbed Michael’s arm and pulled him down.

James arrived seconds later.

Michael was restrained.

But before the police took him away, he looked at Olivia.

“You think this is over?”

Olivia stared.

“No.”

Michael smiled.

“It has just begun.”

The investigation expanded quickly.

Federal agents arrived.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Daniel was arrested.

Several board members were questioned.

Victoria disappeared.

But the biggest shock came from the evidence in Michael’s files.

One folder contained a document dated ten years earlier.

It showed that Michael had not planned the fraud alone.

He had a partner.

Someone inside the Bennett family.

And the name was Olivia’s mother.
