They Called the Ranch Worthless — Until the Young Farmhand Bought It and Turned It Around
Chapter 11
Ten years after Emily bought Lawson Ranch, the auction house sent her a framed copy of the original sale notice.
She laughed.
The words were still there.
DISTRESSED PROPERTY
UNPRODUCTIVE ACREAGE
FORECLOSURE
She hung it in the office.
Underneath, she added one line.
Purchased anyway.
Caleb laughed when he saw it.
“You’ve become sentimental.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at the office.
“Remember how broke we were?”
“Yes.”
“We ate eggs for dinner for two months.”
“Three.”
He laughed.
“True.”
“Would you do it again?”
He thought.
“Absolutely.”
“So would I.”
They looked out the window.
The old barn had been restored.
The creek flowed.
The pastures were green.
Cattle moved across them.
A new generation of apprentices worked near the southern fence.
The ranch had become something no one had expected.
Not a luxury property.
Not a corporate farm.
A working landscape.
A community.
An educational center.
A business.
A family.
Emily had not become the richest farmer.
She became one of the most respected.
And she still drove an old truck.
That amused people.
A journalist once asked:
“Why don’t you buy a nicer one?”
Emily laughed.
“Because this one works.”
That had always been her philosophy.
Use what works.
Fix what doesn’t.
Don’t spend money to impress people.
Spend it to improve the system.
