The cashier at the grocery store stopped asking for his ID.
The mechanic down the street began waving when Ethan passed.
June started keeping his usual coffee ready.
Walter started calling him “kid,” despite Ethan being twenty-seven.
Lily began leaving drawings in his mailbox.
One showed Ethan repairing a boat.
Another showed Ethan holding a wrench.
A third showed him standing beside a house.
Underneath, Lily had written:
ETHAN’S HOME.
He kept that one.
He put it on the refrigerator.
