THE JOB THAT MADE ETHAN COLE PART OF GREYHAVEN

Chapter 8

The next evening, Ethan saw the man.

He was standing at the harbor.

Dark jacket.

Gray hat.

Hands in his pockets.

Watching the boats.

Ethan stopped across the street.

The man looked directly at him.

Neither moved.

Then a truck passed between them.

When it was gone, the man had disappeared.

Ethan walked to the harbor.

He searched the docks.

Nothing.

Walter was working on a boat.

“You looking for someone?”

“No.”

Walter didn’t look up.

“That’s usually when you’re looking.”

Ethan leaned against the boat.

“Someone came to the hotel.”

Walter stopped working.

“Who?”

“Don’t know.”

“What did he want?”

“Me.”

Walter looked at him.

“Problem?”

“Maybe.”

“Want help?”

Ethan thought.

“Not yet.”

Walter nodded.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because when you say not yet, it means you think you can handle it.”

“And?”

Walter smiled.

“Usually you’re right.”
