THE HOUSE ETHAN COLE BUILT FOR TWO
Chapter 13
Fatherhood didn’t arrive in one moment.
There was no magical transformation.
Ethan didn’t suddenly become confident.
He still worried.
He still made mistakes.
He still didn’t know what he was doing half the time.
But he learned.
He learned how to braid hair badly.
How to check homework.
How to make pancakes.
How to recognize when Lily was upset even when she said she wasn’t.
He learned that silence could mean tiredness.
That a closed door didn’t always mean anger.
That sometimes children wanted answers.
And sometimes they simply wanted someone to sit beside them.
One evening, Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.
Ethan was fixing a broken chair.
She looked up.
“Dad?”
The screwdriver stopped.
Ethan slowly raised his eyes.
Lily seemed to realize what she had said.
Her face changed.
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan put the screwdriver down.
“For what?”
“I don’t know.”
He walked around the table.
He crouched beside her.
“You don’t have to be sorry.”
She looked at him.
“Can I call you that?”
Ethan’s eyes softened.
“Yeah.”
Lily smiled.
“Dad.”
He nodded.
“Yeah.”
She returned to her drawing.
Ethan stood there for a moment.
Then went back to the chair.
His hands were steady.
His eyes weren’t.
