THE HOUSE ETHAN COLE BUILT FOR TWO
Chapter 11
At three fifteen, Ethan was waiting outside the school.
Children ran through the gates.
Parents stood beside cars.
Teachers talked near the entrance.
Then Lily appeared.
She was holding a piece of paper.
She saw Ethan.
Her face changed.
She ran toward him.
Ethan caught her.
“How was it?”
She held up the paper.

He looked.
It was a picture of a house.
Two people stood in front of it.

One tall.
One small.
There was a crooked sun in the corner.
Ethan looked at it for a long time.

“That’s us?”
Lily nodded.
“And that’s our house.”
Ethan smiled.

She took his hand.
“Can we go home?”
Ethan looked at her.
The word landed differently.

Home.
Not the house.

He squeezed her hand.
