THE DAYS THAT STARTED TO FEEL LIKE HOME
Chapter 11
The days continued.
That was the strange beauty of it.
Nothing enormous happened.
And yet Ethan remembered them.
Monday morning coffee.
Tuesday fixing the clock.
Wednesday helping a fisherman repair his boat.
Thursday carrying boxes into the community center.
Friday dinner at June’s.
Saturday basketball with the local teenagers.
Sunday sitting on the pier.
The routine became a rhythm.
Ethan learned people’s schedules.
He knew when the fishing boats returned.
He knew when the bakery opened.
He knew which streets became flooded after heavy rain.
He knew which children were supposed to be home before dark.
He knew which table June reserved for the old fishermen.
He knew which chair Walter always used.
He knew which shopkeeper would complain about tourists.
And he knew that if he disappeared for two days, someone would ask where he had been.
That last part surprised him most.
People noticed.
Not because Ethan was special.
Because he belonged.
