The CEO Shoved an Elderly Woman Asking for Bread—Then Learned She Owned the Company

Chapter 3

After the elderly woman was escorted out, Victoria returned to her office.

She shut the door hard.

Her hands were still shaking.

Not from guilt.

From fear.

Her chief financial officer, Daniel Price, stood near the window.

“You look pale.”

“You knew?”

“Knew what?”

“That Margaret Whitmore was coming today?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I didn’t.”

Victoria threw the document onto his desk.

“Then explain this.”

Daniel picked it up.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“She was downstairs.”

“Margaret?”

Victoria nodded.

“The actual Margaret Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

Daniel slowly sat down.

For years, the company had been controlled through the Whitmore Family Trust.

Margaret rarely appeared at headquarters.

She attended only major board meetings.

Her approval was required for major acquisitions, executive appointments, and certain compensation packages.

But nobody had seen her in person for nearly three years.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“What did you do?”

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel stood.

“What did you do, Victoria?”

“I told a woman to leave.”

“You shoved her.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“She was causing a scene.”

“She was the owner.”

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That doesn’t make it better.”

Victoria looked toward the city skyline.

“She can’t fire me.”

Daniel said nothing.

“She just became CEO,” Victoria continued. “The board appointed me.”

“Margaret controls the voting shares.”

“She still needs the board.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You really don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Margaret doesn’t need to convince anyone.”

He pointed toward the document.

“She owns enough of this company to replace the entire board if she wants.”

Silence filled the room.

Victoria looked down.

Then she smiled.

A small, controlled smile.

“She won’t.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because people like her don’t destroy what they built.”

Victoria picked up the document.

“She’ll be emotional. She’ll threaten me. Then she’ll calm down.”

Daniel watched her carefully.

“You’re betting your career on an old woman’s forgiveness?”

Victoria looked at him.

“No.”

She placed the document into a drawer.

“I’m betting that she won’t have the courage to admit she made a mistake hiring me.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You still don’t understand what happened downstairs.”

Victoria opened her laptop.

“What happened?”

“You weren’t being tested for your ability to run the company.”

Daniel paused.

“You were being tested for your character.”
