The Billionaire Thought Her Daughter Feared Everyone — Until an 8-Year-Old Hugged the New Single-Dad Ex-Navy SEAL Bodyguard
Chapter 4
Ethan’s daughter Emma visited the estate that weekend.
Victoria was nervous.
She didn’t know how Lily would react.
Instead, Lily opened the door.
She stared at Emma.
Emma stared back.
Then Lily asked:
“Do you like horses?”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
“Come on.”
They disappeared together.
Victoria watched them.
Ethan smiled.
“They’re fine.”
“How?”
“Kids understand things faster than adults.”
The girls spent the afternoon together.
Lily showed Emma the stables.
Emma showed Lily how to make a bracelet from old string.
They laughed.
For the first time in months, the mansion sounded like a home instead of a fortress.
Victoria looked at Ethan.
“You bring her here often?”
“Only when it’s safe.”
“You trust me?”
“I trust the security.”
She smiled.
“That’s less flattering.”
He laughed.
Later, Victoria watched Ethan kneel beside Emma and tie her shoe.
The tenderness surprised her.
He was a trained military operator.
A man capable of walking into danger without hesitation.
But around his daughter, he was gentle.
She wondered if that was why Lily trusted him.
Not because he was strong.
Because he knew when not to use strength.
That night, Victoria found Emma asleep on the couch with Lily beside her.
Ethan carried Emma upstairs.
Victoria carried Lily.
They met in the hallway.
Ethan whispered:
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For letting Emma stay.”
“She makes Lily happy.”
He smiled.
“So does Lily.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You have a good daughter.”
“So do you.”
She smiled.
“She’s not always easy.”
“Neither is mine.”
They both laughed.
Their relationship was changing.
Slowly.
They spent more time together.
Talking after Lily went to bed.
Sharing coffee in the morning.
Victoria discovered that Ethan read history books.
Ethan discovered Victoria secretly watched terrible reality television.
She made him promise never to tell anyone.
He promised.
Then one evening, the power went out.
The mansion went completely dark.
Lily panicked.
Ethan moved toward her bedroom.
Victoria followed.
Lily reached for Ethan’s hand.
“Stay.”
He sat on the floor beside her.
Emma slept nearby.
Ethan told the girls stories about his time in the Navy.
Nothing dangerous.
Just the funny parts.
A seagull stealing food.
A training exercise interrupted by rain.
A sailor who snored so loudly everyone moved rooms.
Lily laughed.
Victoria watched from the doorway.
The man who had once seemed like a hired protector was becoming part of the family.
That scared her.
Because Victoria knew better than anyone that the people you loved were the people you could lose.
