The Billionaire Thought Her Daughter Feared Everyone — Until an 8-Year-Old Hugged the New Single-Dad Ex-Navy SEAL Bodyguard

Chapter 3

Ethan changed the entire security structure overnight.

He moved Lily’s bedroom.

Changed access codes.

Reassigned staff.

Removed two cameras.

Installed temporary motion sensors.

Victoria protested.

“This is excessive.”

“No.”

“It’s my house.”

“It’s your daughter.”

She stared at him.

He didn’t back down.

“You hired me to keep her safe.”

“Yes.”

“Then let me do it.”

Victoria nodded.

“Fine.”

Ethan worked continuously.

He slept only a few hours.

Lily watched him from a distance.

One morning, she approached.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking the cameras.”

“Why?”

“Because someone tried to get inside.”

“Are they going to hurt me?”

Ethan looked at her.

“I won’t let them.”

She nodded.

Then asked:

“Are you scared?”

Ethan smiled.

“Sometimes.”

“You’re a bodyguard.”

“Bodyguards get scared.”

“Then why don’t you run?”

He crouched.

“Because being scared and running away aren’t the same thing.”

Lily thought about that.

Then nodded.

Victoria overheard.

She watched Ethan carefully.

He didn’t treat Lily like a fragile child.

He treated her like a person.

That afternoon, Victoria asked Ethan to walk with her.

“You have children.”

“One.”

“Would you put Emma in this situation?”

“No.”

“Then why are you comfortable putting yourself here?”

“I didn’t say I was comfortable.”

She looked at him.

“Then why?”

He answered honestly.

“Because I know what it feels like when nobody can protect your family.”

Victoria said nothing.

Ethan continued:

“When Emma’s mother died, I thought I could keep her safe from everything.”

“You couldn’t.”

“No.”

He looked at the garden.

“Nobody can.”

“Then what’s the point?”

“Being there.”

Victoria stopped.

That answer hit her harder than she expected.

She had spent years trying to guarantee Lily’s safety.

Maybe that was impossible.

Maybe what mattered was making sure Lily never felt alone.

Ethan’s investigation discovered something.

A staff member had accessed Victoria’s private schedule.

The employee was a junior assistant.

She disappeared before questioning.

Ethan traced the access.

The data had been sent to an encrypted account.

The account belonged to a private security company.

Victoria recognized the name.

“Falcon Ridge.”

Ethan nodded.

“Do you know them?”

“I’ve used them before.”

“Three years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Who hired them?”

Victoria hesitated.

“My former business partner.”

Ethan frowned.

“Name?”

“Richard Vale.”

The name meant nothing to Lily.

But Ethan recognized it.

Richard Vale had been a powerful investor.

He had lost a major legal battle against Victoria.

He had threatened her once.

Then disappeared.

Ethan searched old military intelligence files.

Richard had connections with private contractors.

One company had several former special operations personnel.

Ethan became cautious.

“This isn’t about revenge.”

“What is it?”

“Money.”

Victoria stared.

“What money?”

He showed her documents.

Richard had been trying to force Victoria into selling one of her company’s divisions.

A division worth billions.

If Lily were harmed, the company could fall into chaos.

Victoria understood.

“They want control.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily is leverage.”

Ethan nodded.

Victoria looked at her daughter.

For the first time, the billion-dollar company felt less important than the eight-year-old girl upstairs.

“Protect her.”

Ethan answered:

“I will.”
