The Billionaire Thought Her Daughter Feared Everyone — Until an 8-Year-Old Hugged the New Single-Dad Ex-Navy SEAL Bodyguard

Chapter 2

Victoria could not stop thinking about the hug.

She watched the security footage twice.

Lily had approached Ethan.

No one had encouraged her.

No one had told her to.

She had simply chosen him.

That evening, Victoria found Ethan in the kitchen.

He was sitting at the table reviewing security plans.

“You have a minute?”

“Yes.”

“Why did she hug you?”

Ethan looked up.

“I don’t know.”

“That doesn’t happen.”

“I figured.”

“What did you say to her?”

“Nothing.”

“Did you do something?”

“No.”

Victoria studied him.

“You’re different.”

He smiled slightly.

“That’s usually what people say before they fire me.”

She laughed despite herself.

“I’m not firing you.”

“Good.”

Victoria sat across from him.

“Tell me about your daughter.”

Ethan’s expression softened.

“Her name is Emma.”

“How old?”

“Seven.”

“Where is she?”

“With my sister during work.”

“You left the Navy to raise her?”

“Partly.”

“Partly?”

He looked down.

“Her mother died.”

Victoria went quiet.

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

“What happened?”

“Car accident.”

Victoria understood that kind of silence.

Loss had a way of making people careful with words.

Ethan returned to the security plan.

“You asked why Lily hugged me.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe because I didn’t ask her to.”

Victoria frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Most adults treat anxious children like they’re broken.”

He looked at her.

“They keep asking questions.”

“Are you okay?”

“Why are you scared?”

“Why don’t you talk?”

“Why don’t you smile?”

He shook his head.

“Sometimes children just need someone who doesn’t demand anything.”

Victoria looked toward the hallway.

“You think that’s what she needed?”

“Maybe.”

Victoria nodded slowly.

She had spent years trying to make Lily behave normally.

Maybe she had never asked what Lily actually needed.

That night, Lily asked Ethan to stay for dinner.

Victoria nearly dropped her fork.

Lily had never requested that a bodyguard eat with them.

Ethan sat quietly.

Lily asked:

“Do you have a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“What is her name?”

“Emma.”

“Is she nice?”

“Sometimes.”

Lily laughed.

Victoria stared at her.

Her daughter was laughing.

Actually laughing.

Ethan noticed.

“You should tell her that joke is not very funny.”

Lily laughed harder.

Victoria smiled.

Then Ethan’s phone vibrated.

He looked at the message.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Victoria asked.

He stood.

“Someone entered the west service gate.”

Victoria became tense.

“Security?”

“Didn’t see them.”

Ethan moved immediately.

He checked the cameras.

A figure appeared briefly.

Hooded.

Moving toward the guest wing.

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Where’s Lily?”

Victoria’s face went pale.

“Upstairs.”

Ethan ran.

Victoria followed.

Lily was in her room.

Safe.

But the window was open.

Ethan examined the frame.

No damage.

Someone had unlocked it from outside.

He looked toward the garden.

A small footprint marked the soil.

The intruder had been close.

Very close.

Ethan turned to Victoria.

“This wasn’t a random trespasser.”

“How do you know?”

“They knew exactly where the cameras couldn’t see.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Someone inside helped them.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily appeared behind them.

She looked frightened.

Ethan crouched.

“I’m here.”

She whispered:

“Don’t leave.”

Ethan looked at Victoria.

Then at Lily.

“I won’t.”

For some reason, those words calmed her.

Victoria saw it.

Her daughter trusted him.

And Ethan understood something before anyone else did.

The threat wasn’t just about Victoria anymore.

Someone was trying to reach Lily.
