The Billionaire Pretended to Be an Ordinary Man to Find Real Love — Then She Discovered Who He Really Was
Chapter 4
The truth began with a restaurant.
Sophia had won an award at her school.
Daniel wanted to celebrate.
He took her to a restaurant she had always wanted to try.
She looked at the entrance.
“This place is expensive.”
“We’ll be fine.”
“How do you know?”
“I know.”
She laughed.
They were seated.
Sophia looked around.
“Who owns this place?”
Daniel hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
The waiter recognized him.
“Mr. Reed.”
Daniel immediately raised a finger.
The waiter stopped.
Sophia looked at him.
“Mr. Reed?”
The waiter recovered.
“Sorry. I thought you were someone else.”
He walked away.
Sophia stared.
Daniel knew the restaurant because he had purchased the building two years earlier through one of his investment companies.
He had forgotten the staff might recognize him.
Sophia frowned.
“Who did he think you were?”
“Someone else.”
She didn’t believe him.
Dinner continued.
Halfway through, Daniel received a call.
He stepped outside.
Sophia watched.
His voice changed.
Professional.
Commanding.
She couldn’t hear the words.
But the tone was unfamiliar.
When he returned, she asked:
“Everything okay?”
“Work.”
“What kind?”
“Complicated.”
She sighed.
“Daniel.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The question was simple.
He didn’t answer.
That night, she went home alone.
She didn’t call him.
The following morning, Daniel went to the community center.
Sophia was there.
She looked at him.
“You’re not who I thought you were.”
He became still.
“What do you mean?”
“I searched your name.”
Daniel said nothing.
“Your name isn’t Daniel Carter.”
He closed his eyes.
“No.”
She looked hurt.
“Your name is Daniel Reed.”
“Yes.”
“The CEO?”
“Yes.”
“The billionaire?”
“Yes.”
She laughed bitterly.
“How long?”
“From the beginning.”
Her eyes filled.
“Everything was a lie.”
“No.”
“You lied about your name.”
“Yes.”
“Your job.”
“Yes.”
“Your apartment.”
“Yes.”
“Your money.”
“Yes.”
“How is that not everything?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Because what I felt was real.”
She shook her head.
“How can I know?”
“You can’t.”
That answer made her cry.
“You don’t get to say that.”
“I know.”
She stepped back.
“Why did you do this?”
“Because I wanted someone to know me before they knew the money.”
“And now?”
“Now I’m terrified you’ll stop seeing me.”
Sophia looked at him.
“You should have given me the choice.”
He nodded.
“You’re right.”
She wiped her tears.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
She walked away.
Daniel didn’t follow.
For the first time since he became a billionaire, he felt completely powerless.
Money couldn’t fix this.
Influence couldn’t fix this.
Apologies might not be enough.
He had wanted to know whether someone could love him for himself.
Instead, he had forgotten that the other person deserved to know the whole person too.
