The Billionaire Pretended to Be an Ordinary Man to Find Real Love — Then She Discovered Who He Really Was

Chapter 3

Sophia started noticing things.

Small things.

Daniel knew too much about business.

He understood finance.

He recognized expensive wine but never ordered it.

He could discuss architecture.

He knew how corporate boards worked.

He had once casually mentioned a private aviation company.

Sophia looked at him.

“How do you know so much?”

He laughed.

“Read a lot.”

“You read annual reports?”

“Sometimes.”

She smiled.

“You’re weird.”

“I’ve been told.”

He avoided lying whenever possible.

But avoiding wasn’t the same as telling the truth.

One Saturday, Sophia suggested they take a trip.

“Where?”

“The mountains.”

Daniel smiled.

“Okay.”

They drove three hours north.

The cabin Sophia rented was small.

She had brought groceries.

Daniel built a fire.

They cooked together.

It was one of the happiest weekends of his life.

On Sunday morning, they hiked.

At the top of a hill, Sophia sat on a rock.

She looked toward the mountains.

“I could stay here forever.”

Daniel smiled.

“We could.”

She turned.

“Would you?”

“Yes.”

“Even without your job?”

He hesitated.

“Maybe.”

Sophia laughed.

“You’re always mysterious.”

He didn’t respond.

She looked at him.

“Do you have something you don’t tell people?”

Daniel stared at the mountains.

“Yes.”

“What?”

He wanted to tell her.

Instead:

“Something complicated.”

She sighed.

“I won’t force you.”

That made it worse.

He looked at her.

“Sophia.”

“It’s okay.”

She smiled.

“Everyone has private things.”

They returned home.

The next morning, Daniel had a problem.

A major acquisition was collapsing.

His board needed him.

He couldn’t stay away.

He returned to headquarters secretly.

James was waiting.

“You’ve been gone for three weeks.”

“I know.”

“Investor confidence is falling.”

“We’ll fix it.”

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You need to decide.”

“Decide what?”

“Whether you’re a CEO pretending to be a normal man or a normal man pretending not to be a CEO.”

Daniel stared.

James handed him a file.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The press is investigating your disappearance.”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“If they find out where I am?”

“They’ll find Sophia.”

He became serious.

“Keep her out of this.”

“I’ll try.”

But the secret had already begun leaking.

A photograph of Daniel and Sophia appeared in a local newspaper.

The headline was vague.

Mystery Man Seen With School Counselor

Sophia saw it.

She showed Daniel.

“Do you know this man?”

He looked at the photograph.

It was him.

“Maybe.”

She laughed.

“You don’t recognize yourself?”

Daniel froze.

Sophia stared.

She was joking.

He forced a smile.

“Bad angle.”

She laughed.

“You’re impossible.”

That night, Daniel couldn’t sleep.

He knew the secret was becoming dangerous.

Then Sophia asked:

“Would you tell me if your life were very different from what I think?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before it mattered.”

She smiled.

“It already matters.”

He didn’t answer.

That was the moment Daniel knew he had waited too long.

But he still didn’t tell her.

Not yet.
