Single Mom Practiced Her Interview in the Elevator — Unaware the Man Was the CEO!

Chapter 14

The scandal lasted for months.

Executives testified.

Financial records were released.

Sterling Innovations paid restitution.

Several former officers were prosecuted.

The company survived.

But Ethan changed it completely.

He created independent financial oversight.

Opened the old records to investigators.

Removed family-controlled trusts.

And established a program supporting single parents returning to the workforce.

Emily became part of that transformation.

Not because she was Ethan’s girlfriend.

Not because she was Mark’s widow.

Because she had earned her place.

Three months after Northstar was destroyed, Emily found a letter on her desk.

No signature.

Just one sentence.

Your husband would be proud of you.

She knew immediately who had written it.

Ethan.

That evening, she found him waiting outside the office.

“You wrote that.”

“Yes.”

“You’re terrible at pretending.”

“I know.”

Emily smiled.

“How was your meeting?”

“Long.”

“How long?”

“Four hours.”

“You need better hobbies.”

“I have one.”

“What?”

He stepped closer.

“You.”

She laughed.

“That’s terrible.”

“It worked.”

They walked downstairs together.

Sophie was waiting in the lobby.

She ran toward Ethan.

“You’re late!”

He crouched.

“I’m sorry.”

“You promised ice cream.”

“I remember.”

Emily watched them.

Ethan looked up.

“Coming?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

As they left the building, Emily looked back at the tower.

A year earlier, she had entered that building terrified.

She had no idea she was walking into a company connected to her husband’s secret.

She had no idea the man beside her was the CEO.

And she certainly hadn’t expected to fall in love with him.

But the strangest part was something else.

Ethan had once believed power meant controlling everything.

Emily had taught him that trust meant allowing someone to stand beside you.

One evening, they sat together on the apartment balcony.

Sophie was asleep inside.

Emily leaned against Ethan’s shoulder.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you really cancel your meeting that morning?”

He smiled.

“You mean in the elevator?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were interesting.”

“That sounds arrogant.”

“It probably was.”

“You could have just interviewed me normally.”

“I wanted to hear the real you.”

Emily looked at him.

“And?”

“You were better when you forgot I was there.”

She laughed.

“That’s unfair.”

“Probably.”

She rested her head against him.

“Would you still hire me if you hadn’t been there?”

Ethan thought for a moment.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you told me you solve problems.”

“And?”

“You solved the biggest one.”

“What problem?”

He looked at her.

“Me.”

She laughed.

“You’re impossible.”

“You love me.”

She smiled.

“I do.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then Sophie appeared in the doorway.

“Are you two kissing again?”

Emily laughed.

“Yes.”

Sophie frowned.

“Okay.”

She disappeared.

Ethan looked at Emily.

“We’ve been judged.”

“Terribly.”

They laughed.

And for the first time in years, Ethan felt something his father’s company had never given him.

Home.
