Single Mom Practiced Her Interview in the Elevator — Unaware the Man Was the CEO!

Chapter 13

The old Sterling headquarters had been abandoned for a decade.

The Northstar system was hidden beneath it.

Ethan, Emily, Noah, and a small federal investigative team entered the building just before midnight.

Robert’s key opened the lower archive.

Inside was a room filled with old servers.

At the center was a single terminal.

Northstar.

Emily looked at Ethan.

“This is it.”

He nodded.

Noah connected the evidence drives.

“We have to preserve everything before shutting it down.”

Emily studied the system.

“It has three layers.”

Ethan looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because the interface isn’t built like accounting software.”

She pointed.

“Layer one moves money.”

“Layer two manipulates ownership.”

“And layer three?”

Emily read the code.

“Creates false identities.”

Ethan looked at her.

“That’s how they used Mark’s name after his death.”

“Yes.”

“And my credentials.”

“Yes.”

“Then there must be an emergency override.”

“There is.”

Emily found it.

One command.

RESET TO ORIGINAL TRUST ARCHITECTURE

Noah frowned.

“What does that do?”

“It removes the illegal ownership layer.”

“And the money?”

“Freezes everything.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

“Would the transfer happen?”

“No.”

“Then do it.”

Emily hesitated.

“There is a warning.”

“What warning?”

“If the original trust isn’t verified, the company could lock itself permanently.”

“How do we verify it?”

Emily searched.

There were two required signatures.

Gerald Sterling.

And Ethan Sterling.

Ethan stared.

“My father built this.”

“And you inherited the key.”

He placed his hand on the scanner.

Nothing happened.

“It’s not accepting it.”

Emily looked at the screen.

“Your father never transferred the second authorization.”

“Then whose signature is missing?”

Emily looked at the code.

Her face changed.

“Mark.”

Silence.

“Your husband?”

“Yes.”

“How can a dead man authorize it?”

Emily remembered the blue watch.

“The watch.”

She connected it.

A hidden signature loaded.

Northstar accepted the authorization.

The system began shutting down.

Then alarms screamed.

Robert had triggered the building’s emergency lock.

Doors slammed shut.

Noah shouted,

“We’re trapped!”

Ethan grabbed Emily’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

The lights went red.

Daniel’s voice came over the intercom.

“You should have left the system alone.”

Ethan looked up.

“Where are you?”

“Watching.”

Emily found the building map.

“There’s an emergency exit beneath the server room.”

“No time.”

“Ethan.”

She pointed.

“We have four minutes.”

They ran.

At the final corridor, Daniel appeared.

He held a gun.

“Stop.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“It’s over.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Your husband ruined everything.”

Emily answered,

“No. He exposed it.”

Daniel raised the gun.

Then another voice echoed through the corridor.

“Drop it.”

Robert stood behind him.

Daniel turned.

Robert shook his head.

“You’ve lost.”

Daniel’s hand trembled.

Then federal agents stormed the corridor.

Daniel dropped the weapon.

It was over.

For the first time in twenty-one years, Northstar was silent.

And Ethan Sterling was finally free of his father’s shadow.
