Single Dad Turned Down His CEO Boss Twice—Then She Proposed in Front of the Board

Chapter 9

The scandal exploded across the business press.

Richard Sloan was arrested.

Several former executives were questioned.

Sterling Innovations’ stock dropped sharply.

Competitors attacked.

Shareholders demanded Victoria resign.

The board called for another emergency meeting.

Daniel expected chaos.

Instead, Victoria walked into the room carrying one document.

Her resignation.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“What I have to do.”

The board chairman looked surprised.

“Victoria, the board hasn’t asked you to resign.”

“They should.”

“Why?”

“Because my family protected corruption.”

A director leaned forward.

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

“But your father did.”

Victoria nodded.

“And as long as I’m CEO, people will say Sterling only survived because I did.”

Daniel stood.

“That isn’t fair.”

Victoria looked at him.

“It doesn’t have to be.”

She started to walk away.

Daniel followed her into the hallway.

“You’re quitting.”

“Yes.”

“Because of shame.”

“Because of responsibility.”

“You didn’t cause this.”

“No.”

“But you’re letting your father define you.”

Victoria stopped.

She looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

“You think being strong means refusing to fall.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I think being strong means staying when everyone expects you to run.”

Victoria stared at him.

Then she asked,

“What would you do?”

Daniel answered immediately.

“Stay.”

She looked away.

“I can’t ask the board to trust me.”

“Then earn it.”

Those words changed her mind.

Victoria returned to the boardroom.

“I withdraw my resignation.”

The room went silent.

“I will remain CEO and lead a complete restructuring of the company.”

A director asked,

“And what about the past?”

“We expose all of it.”

For the next six months, Victoria rebuilt Sterling from the inside.

Daniel became head of strategic operations.

They worked closely.

But their relationship remained complicated.

They never crossed professional boundaries inside the company.

Outside work, they grew closer.

Noah adored Victoria.

She attended his school play.

Helped him build a cardboard rocket.

Even learned the names of his favorite dinosaurs.

One evening, Noah asked Daniel,

“Is Victoria family?”

Daniel looked at his son.

“Why?”

“Because she comes to everything.”

Daniel smiled.

“We’re still figuring that out.”

Noah nodded.

Then he whispered,

“I think she should be.”

Daniel looked at him.

His son was five.

But somehow, he understood more than most adults.

That night, Victoria sat beside Daniel on the porch.

“You know,” she said, “I’ve never been afraid of a boardroom.”

“I know.”

“I’ve been afraid of this.”

Daniel turned.

“Of what?”

“Wanting something I can’t control.”

He smiled.

“You mean me?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I mean a future.”

Daniel took her hand.

“You don’t have to control it.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

For once, neither of them needed answers.

But the next day, something unexpected happened.

Victoria received a letter.

No return address.

Inside was one sentence.

Your father hid one more secret.

And this one concerns Daniel Carter.
