Single Dad Turned Down His CEO Boss Twice—Then She Proposed in Front of the Board

Chapter 3

The first real crisis arrived in November.

A major European supplier suddenly canceled a contract.

Sterling Innovations was minutes away from losing a critical product launch.

Executives panicked.

Victoria called an emergency meeting.

Daniel arrived carrying three folders and a paper bag.

Victoria stared at the bag.

“What is that?”

“Dinner.”

“For who?”

Daniel opened it.

“Everyone.”

Twenty exhausted executives looked toward the sandwiches.

Daniel placed them on the table.

Then he turned toward the screen.

“We have forty-eight hours.”

Victoria watched him speak.

Not once did he blame anyone.

Not once did he raise his voice.

He simply solved problems.

By midnight, the strategy team had found an alternative supplier.

At 1:30 a.m., the new contract was signed.

At 2:00, everyone left.

Everyone except Daniel and Victoria.

The office was nearly silent.

Victoria stood beside the windows overlooking the city.

“You should go home.”

Daniel gathered his papers.

“I will.”

She turned.

“How?”

“Taxi.”

“Your car?”

“In the shop.”

“I’ll drive you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You are impossible.”

“Probably.”

She almost smiled.

Then thunder rolled outside.

Rain began hitting the windows.

Victoria looked at him.

“Why do you keep saying no to me?”

Daniel paused.

“To you?”

“Yes.”

He thought for a moment.

“Because you don’t hear no very often.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Because I don’t want you to mistake respect for interest.”

Silence.

Victoria’s expression changed.

She understood.

Daniel wasn’t flirting.

He wasn’t playing games.

He was protecting a boundary.

“For the record,” she said quietly, “I don’t think you’re interested in me.”

“I didn’t say that.”

Her heartbeat suddenly felt louder.

“You didn’t.”

Daniel put down his folder.

“I said I don’t want you to mistake one thing for another.”

Victoria searched his face.

“And what exactly are you saying?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I’m saying you’re my boss.”

He paused.

“That’s all.”

Victoria nodded.

“Understood.”

Daniel left.

The elevator doors closed.

Victoria remained standing in the empty hallway.

She had been pursued by powerful men, politicians, athletes, heirs, executives.

She had never been affected by rejection.

But Daniel’s rejection was different.

It wasn’t cruel.

It wasn’t arrogant.

It was careful.

And somehow that made it impossible to forget.

The next morning, Daniel arrived at work as usual.

Victoria treated him professionally.

No special treatment.

No invitations.

No late-night conversations.

Three weeks passed.

Then something changed.

Daniel began receiving strange messages on his phone.

Unknown number.

First:

You don’t know who you’re working for.

Then:

Ask Victoria about Thomas Hale.

Then:

Your son is easier to reach than you are.

Daniel froze.

He immediately blocked the number.

He said nothing to Victoria.

Not yet.

Because he had learned something important about powerful companies.

Secrets rarely arrived alone.

And someone inside Sterling Innovations was trying to scare him.
