Single Dad Resigned in Silence…Then His CEO Arrived at Midnight With a Shocking Offer
Chapter 7
Daniel didn’t tell Lily what he had learned.
He didn’t want her childhood replaced by fear.
Instead, he asked Victoria to increase security.
Then he asked the hardest question.
“Why didn’t Sarah tell me?”
Victoria sat across from him.
“Maybe she was trying to protect you.”
“She could’ve told me.”
“Maybe she thought the danger would pass.”
Daniel looked down.
“She knew something about my family that I didn’t.”
“I think so.”
“Then why did she go to the warehouse?”
Victoria handed him another file.
Sarah had contacted a former Carrington employee.
She had been investigating suspicious payments.
She believed someone had stolen her husband’s family inheritance.
Daniel stared.
“She was helping me.”
“Without telling you.”
He closed his eyes.
All those years of grief suddenly looked different.
He had mourned the woman who left him.
Now he realized she’d been trying to protect him.
Then came the next revelation.
Sarah’s final phone call had been recorded.
Victoria played it.
Daniel heard his wife’s voice.
“I know where it is.”
A man’s voice answered:
“Then tell me.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what’s at stake.”
“I understand exactly.”
“Then you understand your husband is in danger.”
Silence.
Sarah answered:
“Leave him alone.”
The recording ended.
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
He wiped his eyes.
“Who was the man?”
Victoria didn’t know.
But the voice was familiar.
Daniel recognized it.
Robert Hale.
His former manager.
The same man who had tried to push him out of Carrington.
The same man connected to his father’s records.
Robert had known about the patent.
And he had been trying to find it through Daniel.
Victoria immediately ordered a search.
They located Robert’s abandoned house.
Inside was a wall covered with photographs.
Daniel.
Lily.
Sarah.
Victoria.
And one photograph of the original family trust.
At the bottom of the wall was a map.
A property boundary.
Daniel recognized it.
His grandfather’s old farm.
The family farm he had sold after his father’s death.
Daniel stared.
“I thought it was gone.”
Victoria shook her head.
“It wasn’t.”
The property had been placed in a holding company.
It had never legally transferred.
And underneath the land was an abandoned research facility.
The patent wasn’t a paper asset.
It was connected to technology developed there.
Daniel understood.
“They want the facility.”
Victoria nodded.
“And the patent.”
“How much is it worth?”
“More than the inheritance.”
Daniel stared.
“Why would they risk murder for it?”
Victoria answered:
“Because the technology could revolutionize battery storage.”
Daniel looked toward Lily’s room.
“This is why they came after me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t they just take the patent?”
“Because the trust requires your daughter’s signature when she turns eighteen.”
Daniel froze.
Lily was seven.
They had eleven years.
Someone wasn’t planning to wait.
That night, a security alarm sounded.
Someone had breached the property.
Daniel ran toward Lily’s room.
She was gone.
