One evening, Lily came home crying.
“What happened?”
She dropped her backpack.
“My teacher said I’m different.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“Different how?”
“Because I’m rich now.”
He frowned.
“You aren’t.”
“She said everyone knows.”
Daniel sighed.

The company deal.
People knew.
Lily felt exposed.
Daniel looked at her.
“Listen to me.”
She waited.

“You promise?”

“You handled that well.”
“How did you know?”
“Lily called me.”

“She trusts you.”
“I love that.”
Silence.
Then Victoria said:
“I wanted to ask you something.”
“What?”
“The board wants you on the executive committee.”
Daniel laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
She laughed too.
“You didn’t even think about it.”
“I have a child.”
“You can work remotely.”
“I already have enough work.”
“You’d have more authority.”
“I don’t need more authority.”
“Then what do you want?”
Daniel looked toward Lily’s room.
“A life.”
Victoria was quiet.
“That’s a reasonable answer.”
“Thank you.”
“Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“I think I understand why you resigned.”
He waited.
“You weren’t quitting.”
“What then?”
“You were choosing your daughter.”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
“That’s why I offered you the position.”
He looked surprised.
“Because I resigned?”
“Because you proved what matters to you.”
The call ended.
Daniel sat alone.
Then he opened Sarah’s old note.
