She Was Fired From Her Father’s Fashion Empire—So She Returned and Became the Designer He Couldn’t Afford to Lose

CHAPTER 4

Mara left Bennett House carrying a cardboard box.

Four years of work had been reduced to one afternoon.

She walked past the reception desk without looking back.

Ethan tried to follow.

A security guard stopped him.

“Mara!”

She kept walking.

Outside, New York traffic swallowed her.

She didn’t cry until she reached Central Park.

Then everything came out.

Her father hadn’t believed her.

Her family had stolen her work.

And now someone had destroyed the one thing she had spent years building.

That evening, she went to the apartment of her godmother, Harper Reed.

Harper opened the door.

One look at Mara’s face was enough.

“They fired you.”

Mara nodded.

“They think I sold designs to Frost.”

Harper’s husband, Thomas, appeared behind her.

“Did you?”

Mara looked offended.

“No.”

“I know.”

Thomas smiled.

“That’s why we can fix this.”

Mara frowned.

“What?”

Harper disappeared into another room.

When she returned, she carried a box.

Inside were old photographs of Mara’s mother.

Young.

Elegant.

Fearless.

“Your mother built half of what Bennett House became.”

Mara touched a photograph.

“I know.”

“No.”

Harper shook her head.

“You don’t.”

She opened a second box.

Inside were old sketches.

Mara stared.

They were brilliant.

Timeless.

Thomas leaned against the wall.

“Your father still believes your mother was the greatest designer he ever knew.”

Mara looked at him.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Harper smiled.

“Everything.”

The next morning, Thomas shaved Mara’s hair differently.

Harper changed her posture.

They created a new identity.

Miles Reed.

Twenty-seven.

Male.

Independent designer.

No connection to Bennett House.

Mara stared at herself in the mirror.

“I look ridiculous.”

Thomas laughed.

“You look employed.”

Three days later, Miles Reed walked into Bennett House.

He submitted a portfolio.

Jonathan Bennett reviewed it personally.

He turned the first page.

Then the second.

By the tenth, he had stopped breathing.

These designs looked like his wife’s work.

But somehow they felt new.

Jonathan looked up.

“Where did you learn this?”

Miles smiled.

“My mother.”

Jonathan’s expression changed.

He hired him immediately.

Mara had returned.

But this time, her father had no idea who she was.
