She Walked Into the Mafia Boss’s Room to Clean—Then His Family Walked In While He Was Still in a Towel
Chapter 12
The accountant raised his hands.
“I don’t want trouble.”
Matteo stared at him.
“Then why are you with him?”
“I was threatened.”
Antonio laughed.
“That’s what everyone says.”
Sofia stepped forward.
“Where is the missing evidence?”
The accountant looked at her.
“Gone.”
“Where?”
“Distributed.”
Matteo frowned.
“To whom?”
“Everyone.”
Antonio’s face changed.
The accountant had betrayed him.
He had sent copies of the missing pages to regulators, journalists, and prosecutors.
Antonio’s empire was collapsing.
He turned toward the man.
“You fool.”
The accountant shook his head.
“I spent twenty years watching people die because of this family.”
He looked at Sofia.
“Your mother saved me once.”
Sofia froze.
“How?”
“She warned me to leave.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I was afraid.”
He pulled out a folder.
“This is everything.”
Matteo took it.
Inside was proof against Antonio.
Orders.
Payments.
Recordings.
Names.
Sofia looked at Matteo.
“This is enough.”
“Yes.”
Antonio laughed.
“You think prison will stop me?”
Matteo stared.
“No.”
He looked at his grandfather.
“I’m stopping the family.”
Antonio’s smile vanished.
Matteo continued.
“I’m ending the organization.”
“You’re weak.”
“No.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“I’m tired.”
He turned toward his security team.
“Take him.”
Antonio was arrested.
The remaining organization was dismantled.
Matteo gave the evidence to authorities.
He surrendered every illegal account.
Closed the criminal operations.
Kept only the legitimate businesses.
The family protested.
Some called him a traitor.
Others called him foolish.
He didn’t care.
Sofia stood beside him.
“What now?”
He looked at her.
“Now I build something that doesn’t require fear.”
She smiled.
“With me?”
“Yes.”
She reached for his hand.
They walked away from the cemetery.
But Sofia had one final question.
“Matteo.”
“Yes?”
“Why did you really stop me from resigning after the towel incident?”
He laughed.
“You’re bringing that up now?”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“Because you were the first person in years who made me feel normal.”
She smiled.
“You were standing there half naked.”
“I was not half naked.”
“You had a towel.”
“Exactly.”
She laughed.
He continued.
“You weren’t impressed by my name.”
“You were impressed by yours.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I was impressed that you were embarrassed for me.”
Sofia laughed.
“That makes no sense.”
“It did to me.”
He squeezed her hand.
“You didn’t see the mafia boss.”
“You saw a confused man standing in a bedroom.”
“Yes.”
“And that mattered.”
“More than you know.”
She smiled.
They reached the car.
Then Sofia stopped him.
“You never answered one question.”
“What?”
“Do you regret that night?”
He smiled.
“Absolutely not.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You’re impossible.”
“Yes.”
He kissed her forehead.
“And you stayed.”
She smiled.
“I did.”
