She Saved a Freezing Stranger in Her Bakery—Not Knowing He Owned Half the City

Chapter 9

The warehouse stood near the river.

It had been abandoned for almost fifteen years.

Adrian unlocked the side entrance.

Inside, dust covered old machinery.

Mara followed him carefully.

“Your father owned this?”

“Yes.”

“Why abandon it?”

“He didn’t.”

She stopped.

“What do you mean?”

Adrian looked around.

“Someone made it look abandoned.”

Lucas closed the door behind them.

The three walked deeper into the building.

At the far end stood a wall covered with old shipping schedules.

Adrian removed a wooden panel.

A narrow steel door appeared.

He entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with filing cabinets.

Mara stared.

“You’ve known about this?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Lucas.

“How did you?”

Lucas answered quietly.

“Your father showed it to me once.”

Mara walked toward a cabinet.

There were hundreds of files.

Construction.

Banking.

Property.

Political donations.

Legal settlements.

Everything.

Then she found a folder with her mother’s name.

Evelyn Bennett.

Mara’s breath caught.

She opened it.

Inside were letters.

Her mother’s handwriting.

The first began:

Jonathan, I don’t think they know what I have.

Mara sat down.

She read silently.

Evelyn had discovered that several properties were being deliberately undervalued before acquisition.

Small business owners were being pressured to sell.

Loans were being manipulated.

City inspectors were being bribed.

The goal was to acquire entire blocks cheaply, then redevelop them.

Mara looked up.

“That’s what they’re doing now.”

Adrian nodded.

The redevelopment plan affecting her bakery was part of the same pattern.

Lucas pulled another folder.

“This is the recent version.”

Inside were current property maps.

Dozens of buildings.

The bakery was marked in red.

Mara stared.

“Why this building?”

Adrian looked at the map.

“Because it’s the last property they need.”

“Need for what?”

He pointed to the surrounding properties.

“If they control this block, they control access to the river development zone.”

Mara’s bakery sat on the only remaining parcel.

She suddenly understood.

“They’ve been trying to buy me out.”

“Yes.”

“Since before I met you.”

Adrian nodded.

“And now they know you have the documents.”

Mara’s voice dropped.

“Who is they?”

Lucas answered.

“People inside Cole Holdings.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Names.”

Lucas placed a list on the table.

Three executives.

Two lawyers.

One city official.

And one name at the bottom.

Mara read it.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Your brother?”

Adrian went completely still.

His younger half-brother, Nathan Cole.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Lucas looked at him.

“I wish I could say it wasn’t.”

Adrian picked up the list.

“Nathan left the company years ago.”

“He came back six months ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wasn’t certain.”

Mara noticed something else.

A note beside Nathan’s name.

He knows where the original ledger is.

Adrian looked at Lucas.

“Where?”

Lucas pointed to the oldest cabinet.

“Your father never kept it here.”

“Then where?”

Lucas looked toward Mara.

“Your bakery.”

Silence.

Mara swallowed.

“My bakery?”

“Your mother hid it there.”

Adrian looked at her.

“We need to go back.”
