Samuel placed it into a battered player.
Static filled the room.
Then Jonathan Cole’s voice emerged.
“If you’re hearing this, I’m probably dead.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Mara watched him.
His father’s voice continued.
“The people involved will attempt to make you believe this is about property. It isn’t.”
A pause.
“It’s about whether ordinary people can be forced to surrender what belongs to them simply because powerful men decide they are easier to silence.”
Mara’s throat tightened.
Jonathan named the people involved.
Mercer.
The former executives.
The corrupt lawyer.
The contractors.
Then he said something unexpected.
“The bakery on Bennett Street must remain standing.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
His father continued.
“Evelyn knows why.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Adrian said:
“My father knew.”
Mara nodded.
“He trusted my mother.”
“She trusted him.”
Samuel handed Mara another letter.
It was from Evelyn.
The letter explained that Jonathan had instructed her to keep the original evidence hidden until Adrian was old enough and strong enough to fight the people who had taken everything from him.
But Evelyn died before she could finish the plan.
Mara held the letter against her chest.
She whispered:
“She was trying to protect him too.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And you.”
Mara met his eyes.

Adrian reached for her hand.
“Your mother saved my father.”
Mara shook her head.

“Like you.”

Nathan surrendered.
