She Saved a Freezing Stranger in Her Bakery—Not Knowing He Owned Half the City
Chapter 7
Police arrived within twenty minutes.
Nothing had been stolen.
No fingerprints were found.
The cameras had been disabled remotely.
Adrian stood in the kitchen while an investigator examined the door.
Mara watched him.
“You know who did this?”
“No.”
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“You’re leaving something out.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I think someone is looking for the box.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are you afraid of it?”
He didn’t answer.
The investigator approached.
“Mr. Cole, we found something.”
He held out a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a small brass key.
Adrian’s expression tightened.
“Where?”
“Outside the basement window.”
Mara frowned.
“We don’t have a basement window.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Apparently you do.”
They followed the investigator downstairs.
Behind a stack of old shelves, they found a section of brick that didn’t match the rest of the wall.
A hidden opening.
Mara’s heart began beating faster.
Adrian removed several bricks.
Behind them was a narrow cavity.
Inside sat a second box.
This one was larger.
Mara whispered:
“What is happening?”
Adrian pulled the box out.
It was sealed with wax.
The same letter C was pressed into the seal.
He broke it.
Inside were documents.
Property maps.
Bank records.
Handwritten notes.
And photographs.
Adrian spread them across the table.
Mara leaned closer.
The documents showed purchases of buildings throughout the city.
But something was wrong.
Properties had been purchased through shell companies.
Money moved between accounts.
Construction contracts were inflated.
Mara pointed to one name.
“Who’s Daniel Voss?”
Adrian stared at the page.
“My father’s former business partner.”
“He’s still alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Prison.”
Mara looked surprised.
“For what?”
“Fraud.”
She looked at the documents again.
“Maybe he wasn’t working alone.”
Adrian nodded.
The deeper they searched, the more names appeared.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Contractors.
City officials.
People who had once worked for Jonathan Cole.
Then Mara found something.
A handwritten note.
The ink had faded, but the words were clear.
The person closest to Adrian knows about the accounts.
Mara looked up.
“Who is closest to you?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Adrian.”
“My chief financial officer.”
“Do you trust him?”
“I did.”
Mara felt cold.
“What’s his name?”
“Lucas Grant.”
A car stopped outside.
Adrian looked through the window.
His expression changed.
“That’s Lucas.”
Mara’s stomach dropped.
Lucas entered the bakery.
He was tall, polished, and calm.
He smiled when he saw Adrian.
“Adrian.”
Adrian stepped between him and Mara.
“Lucas.”
Lucas looked at the documents.
Then at the hidden box.
His smile disappeared.
“You found it.”
Mara’s blood ran cold.
Adrian said nothing.
Lucas slowly closed the bakery door behind him.
“You should have stayed away from this.”
