She Found Her Grandmother’s Diary in the Attic — Then Discovered Her Name Among 15 Missing Children

CHAPTER 4

Maya refused to stop.

The warning only convinced her that the truth was still alive.

Daniel traced the company connected to the payments.

It had disappeared years ago.

But its former accountant was still alive.

Her name was Margaret Sloan.

They found her living in Washington.

Margaret was reluctant to speak.

Until Maya showed her Evelyn’s diary.

Margaret began crying.

“Your grandmother promised me she would never tell.”

“Tell me what?”

Margaret looked toward the window.

“The children weren’t taken for money.”

“Then why?”

“Because someone believed they were dangerous.”

Maya frowned.

“Children?”

Margaret nodded.

“Their parents.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Political families?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Scientists.”

That changed everything.

She explained that the children were born to fifteen families involved in a private medical research program.

The project had been abandoned after several children developed unexplained neurological problems.

But the company wanted to hide the results.

The children were separated from their parents.

Their identities were changed.

Records were erased.

The parents were told their children had died.

Maya felt a chill.

“And my grandmother?”

Margaret looked at her.

“She discovered what they were doing.”

“Then why did she sign the documents?”

“Because she couldn’t save all of them.”

Margaret reached into a drawer.

She pulled out an envelope.

“Evelyn gave me this twenty-five years ago.”

Inside was a letter.

Maya recognized the handwriting.

I could only save one child.

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

I chose the one who still had a chance to live without knowing what they had done to her.

Maya whispered:

“Me.”

Margaret nodded.

“Your grandmother took you and disappeared.”

“But what happened to the other fourteen?”

Margaret looked away.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel asked:

“You’re lying.”

Margaret began trembling.

“They weren’t killed.”

Maya stared at her.

“Where are they?”

Margaret whispered:

“Somewhere in America.”

Then she said something that changed everything.

“One of them has been looking for you.”
