Maya couldn’t understand the photograph.
It showed Evelyn holding a newborn baby.
Behind her stood a man Maya had never seen.
Lily pointed to him.
“Dr. Nathaniel Voss.”
Daniel recognized the name.
“Lead scientist.”
Lily nodded.
“The project wasn’t studying the children.”
She looked at Maya.
“It was studying their parents.”
Maya frowned.
“Then why were we taken?”
“Because the children inherited something.”
“What?”
Lily hesitated.
“A genetic mutation.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“What kind?”
Lily looked frightened.
“They believed it could predict neurological disease.”
Maya stared.
“That’s why they wanted us?”
“They wanted to track us.”
“But why hide us?”
“Because the experiments failed.”
Lily explained that the project had discovered that several children developed unusual neurological patterns.
The company feared lawsuits.
So they created fake deaths.
The children were placed with families across the country.
But Evelyn discovered that one of the researchers planned to restart the project.
She stole the records.
And disappeared.
Maya looked at the diary.
“Why did she write everything down?”
Lily smiled sadly.
“Because she knew she might not live long enough to tell you.”

“There weren’t fifteen children.”
Maya stared.
“There were sixteen.”
Daniel slowly looked at her.
“The sixteenth child was never documented.”
