She Found Her Grandmother’s Diary in the Attic — Then Discovered Her Name Among 15 Missing Children

CHAPTER 3

The following morning, Maya and Daniel drove to the abandoned Briarwood property.

The building stood behind a line of overgrown pine trees.

Windows were broken.

The sign had fallen sideways.

Maya stepped through the entrance.

Dust covered the floor.

Daniel found an old registration desk.

Behind it were dozens of filing cabinets.

Most were empty.

One wasn’t.

A single folder remained.

Its label read:

B-15.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were photographs of fifteen children.

The same fifteen names from Evelyn’s diary.

But beneath each photograph was another name.

Not their birth name.

A new name.

A new family.

A new identity.

Maya realized what she was looking at.

“Adoption records.”

Daniel nodded.

“Illegal ones.”

Then they found something worse.

Each child had been assigned to a different family.

All wealthy.

All influential.

Several had connections to local politicians.

Maya’s hands trembled.

“Why would someone do this?”

Daniel looked toward the empty hallway.

“Maybe they weren’t selling children.”

“Then what?”

He pulled out the final file.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby.

Maya.

On the back was written:

Subject 15 — removed from Briarwood before transfer.

Maya couldn’t breathe.

Her grandmother had not simply discovered the operation.

She had taken Maya.

And hidden her.

But why?

Daniel found another document.

It contained a list of payments.

Thousands of dollars.

Names.

Dates.

And one company.

Bennett Foundation.

Maya stared.

“My grandfather?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed to the final signature.

Evelyn Bennett.

Maya felt sick.

Her grandmother had signed the document.

For years, Maya had believed Evelyn was the person who saved her.

Now she wasn’t sure whether she had been rescued…

or stolen.

Then Daniel heard a sound.

Footsteps.

Someone was inside the building.

They turned.

A shadow disappeared around the corner.

Daniel ran after it.

Maya followed.

They reached the rear exit.

Nothing.

Only an old car disappearing down the road.

Daniel returned holding something.

A torn piece of paper.

It contained three words.

STOP DIGGING, MAYA.
