She Fell Into a Single Dad’s Arms at Work — Then One Quiet Whisper Made Them Both Believe in Love Again

Chapter 6

Victoria spent the next week questioning everything.

Her father noticed.

“You look miserable.”

“I am.”

“Because of the board?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Then it’s a man.”

She sighed.

“Yes.”

“Does he make you happy?”

“Yes.”

“Does he respect you?”

“Yes.”

“Does he respect your daughter?”

Victoria looked confused.

“He doesn’t have a daughter.”

Her father smiled.

“Then your mistake is simple.”

“What?”

“You’re asking whether the relationship fits your career.”

“Instead, ask whether the person fits your life.”

Victoria thought about that.

Michael fit her life in a way nobody else had.

He didn’t care about her money.

He didn’t need her approval.

He cared about Lily.

He understood grief.

He listened.

He had no desire to control her.

And when she was overwhelmed, he didn’t tell her to work harder.

He told her to rest.

That afternoon, she went to his house.

Michael was helping Lily with homework.

Victoria waited quietly.

Lily saw her.

“You’re here!”

Victoria smiled.

“Yes.”

Michael looked up.

“You okay?”

“I think so.”

He closed the notebook.

“Lily, can you finish this alone?”

She nodded.

Victoria and Michael stepped outside.

“I don’t want to stop.”

He stared at her.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“I am sure about you.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Victoria.”

“I know this is difficult.”

“Yes.”

“I know the board could make it difficult.”

“Yes.”

“I know people will talk.”

“They already do.”

She smiled.

“I still choose you.”

He looked at her.

Then kissed her.

For the first time, there was no hesitation.

No fear.

Just relief.

Inside, Lily watched through the window.

She smiled.

Then went back to her homework.

The relationship continued.

But they needed boundaries.

Michael transferred to a facilities contract outside Victoria’s direct oversight.

Victoria recused herself from decisions involving his company.

Everything was documented.

The board agreed.

The media moved on.

For a while, peace returned.

Then Michael received a call from the school.

Lily had collapsed during class.

He rushed to the hospital.

Victoria followed.

Doctors discovered a serious but treatable condition.

Michael stood in the hallway terrified.

He had already lost one person.

He couldn’t imagine losing another.

Victoria found him sitting alone.

She sat beside him.

He whispered:

“I can’t do this again.”

She took his hand.

“You don’t have to.”

He looked at her.

“I’m scared.”

“Me too.”

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, the powerful CEO disappeared.

She was simply a woman sitting beside a man she loved.

Then she whispered:

“You’re not alone anymore.”

He looked at her.

The words broke something inside him.

He cried.

She held him.

For the first time since Emily died, Michael allowed himself to be weak in front of someone.

And for the first time since her mother died, Victoria allowed herself to admit that she couldn’t control every outcome.

They sat together until morning.

Lily recovered.

The diagnosis was treatable.

When Michael finally saw her smile, he nearly collapsed with relief.

Victoria stood beside him.

Lily looked at them.

“Did you both cry?”

Michael laughed.

“Maybe.”

Victoria smiled.

“A little.”

Lily shook her head.

“Adults are weird.”

They laughed.

The crisis had changed them.

They weren’t just dating anymore.

They had become family.
