She Fell Into a Single Dad’s Arms at Work — Then One Quiet Whisper Made Them Both Believe in Love Again
Chapter 4
Lily noticed everything.
She noticed that her father smiled more.
She noticed Victoria’s name on his phone.
She noticed that he stopped complaining about work.
One Saturday morning, she asked:
“Are you happy?”
Michael looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because you smile when you’re texting.”
He laughed.
“I guess I am.”
“Who are you texting?”
“Victoria.”
Lily smiled.
“I knew it.”
Michael shook his head.
“You don’t know anything.”
“I know you’re blushing.”
“I am not.”
“Yes, you are.”
Michael laughed.
Then became serious.
“Lily.”
“What?”
“Victoria is my friend.”
“Okay.”
“That’s all.”
“Okay.”
Lily continued drawing.
Three minutes later she asked:
“Can she come to dinner?”
Michael stared.
“Maybe.”
Victoria came.
She brought dessert.
Lily opened the door.
“You’re here.”
Victoria smiled.
“Hi.”
Lily hugged her.
Michael watched.
It was the first time he had seen his daughter hug another woman since Emily died.
Something inside him ached.
Dinner was simple.
Chicken.
Potatoes.
Salad.
Victoria loved it.
“I can’t believe you made this.”
Michael smiled.
“You act like I’m a professional chef.”
“You might be.”
Lily interrupted.
“Dad makes better pancakes.”
“Noted.”
After dinner, Lily showed Victoria her room.
Then her drawings.
Then her school project.
Then her favorite stuffed rabbit.
Michael sat in the kitchen alone.
He realized he was nervous.
Not because Victoria was the CEO.
Because she was becoming important.
That scared him.
Later, after Lily fell asleep, Victoria sat on the porch.
Michael joined her.
“Thank you.”
“For dinner?”
“For letting me meet her.”
“She likes you.”
“I like her.”
He smiled.
“She does.”
Victoria looked toward the house.
“She’s lucky.”
“Why?”
“Because she has you.”
Michael looked away.
“I don’t always feel like enough.”
Victoria stared at him.
“You are.”
He swallowed.
“People say that.”
“I don’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because I mean it.”
He looked at her.
She smiled gently.
“You don’t have to be everything.”
“You’re a CEO.”
“Exactly.”
She laughed.
“I know people who are billionaires and still can’t remember to call their mothers.”
Michael smiled.
“That might be you.”
“Possibly.”
They sat in silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
“I like being here.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Michael thought.
“Because nobody expects anything from you.”
She looked at him.
“That’s not true.”
“What?”
“I expect something.”
He waited.
“I expect you to let me stay.”
His heart tightened.
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached for her hand.
That was the beginning.
Not a kiss.
Not a declaration.
Just a hand held beneath a porch light.
It felt safer than anything either had known.
But office gossip was already starting.
Someone had seen Victoria leave Michael’s neighborhood.
By Monday morning, people were talking.
