My Family Used Me to Settle Their Debt—I Never Expected the Mafia Boss to Open His Arms

Chapter 9

The trust records led them to an underground vault beneath the old Delacroix estate.

Elena stood beside Luca.

A biometric scanner waited in front of them.

She placed her hand on it.

Nothing happened.

Luca placed his beside hers.

The machine activated.

A steel door opened.

Inside were documents, gold, property records, and sealed accounts.

But there was something else.

A letter.

For Elena.

She opened it.

Her mother’s handwriting.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you outside our war.

Elena’s tears fell.

The letter explained everything.

Her mother had been born into the Delacroix family.

She had rejected the criminal life.

She married Elena’s father.

Victor saw Elena as the key to the trust.

He tried to control the family.

So Elena’s mother disappeared with her.

The fake debt was created years later to make Victor believe Elena’s father was desperate.

But there was a second layer.

Luca’s father had agreed to protect Elena.

He had planned to make Luca her protector once he was old enough.

But Elena’s mother died before that could happen.

Elena looked at Luca.

“So your father knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“No.”

Her mother had deliberately kept them apart.

Not because she wanted them to meet for business.

Because she believed Luca was the only member of the family capable of loving Elena without using her.

Elena closed her eyes.

A second letter was attached.

Don’t marry her for the trust.

Luca froze.

The next line:

If you ever love my daughter, love her without asking what she can give you.

Luca looked at Elena.

He whispered:

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

Then a gunshot came from outside.

Rafael shouted:

“DOWN!”

The vault door slammed.

Victor’s men had found them.

Luca drew his weapon.

“We need another exit.”

Elena saw a narrow passage behind the vault.

They ran.

Outside, chaos.

Victor had brought dozens of men.

The Delacroix security team fought back.

Elena’s father was taken to safety.

Luca moved beside Elena.

Then a bullet struck his shoulder.

He dropped.

“Luca!”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I’ve had worse.”

She pulled him behind cover.

“Stop saying that.”

He smiled despite the pain.

“You’re starting to sound like a nurse.”

She tore fabric from her sleeve and wrapped his shoulder.

He watched her.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Neither should you.”

“Fair.”

They escaped through an underground tunnel.

At the end was a cliff overlooking the sea.

No vehicles.

Nowhere to go.

Victor appeared behind them.

He pointed his gun.

“It’s over.”

Luca stepped in front of Elena.

Victor laughed.

“Again?”

“You never learn.”

“What?”

“She’s not yours.”

Victor looked at Elena.

“She belongs to the trust.”

“No.”

Elena stepped beside Luca.

“She belongs to herself.”

Victor’s smile vanished.

He raised the gun.

Before he could fire, Elena’s father appeared behind him.

He struck Victor with a metal bar.

Victor fell.

Security officers rushed forward.

They arrested him.

Elena’s father collapsed.

She ran to him.

“Dad!”

He smiled weakly.

“I told you I’d come back.”

She cried.

“You don’t get to decide when you leave me again.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

Luca walked toward them.

Elena looked at him.

“Are you okay?”

He smiled.

“Still alive.”

She laughed through her tears.

Then she hugged him.

He hesitated for half a second.

Then wrapped his arms around her.

For the first time, Elena understood the title of her own story.

Her family had used her to settle a debt.

A mafia boss had opened his arms.

But he had never asked her to repay him.

He had only asked her to stay.
