My Family Used Me to Settle Their Debt—I Never Expected the Mafia Boss to Open His Arms

Chapter 11

The photograph changed everything.

Luca’s father stood beside Elena’s mother.

But there was something different.

They weren’t business partners.

They were holding a baby.

Elena.

The date was two years before her birth.

Luca stared at the photograph.

“This can’t be.”

Elena looked at him.

“Maybe the date is wrong.”

“No.”

Her father arrived.

He brought another document.

A medical record.

Luca’s father had been listed as Elena’s biological father.

Elena stared.

“My father isn’t my father.”

Her actual biological father was Antonio Delacroix.

Luca’s grandfather had been alive when Elena was born.

Her mother had hidden the truth.

Luca’s father had raised the child as his own.

But why?

Because Victor had wanted control of the bloodline.

If Elena were recognized as Antonio’s daughter, she would inherit the trust.

If she were hidden, Victor could manipulate the family.

Elena looked at her father.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since before you were born.”

She closed her eyes.

“So my whole life…”

“I was trying to give you one normal life.”

“You failed.”

Her father lowered his head.

“I know.”

Luca stepped closer.

Elena looked at him.

“Are you angry?”

“I don’t know.”

“You just found out we’re…”

“Related by family history?”

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She stared.

“What?”

“My grandfather being your biological father doesn’t change what we are.”

“But—”

“He isn’t my father.”

“You’re his grandson.”

“Yes.”

“And I’m his daughter.”

“Yes.”

She looked confused.

“Our families are connected.”

“Not by blood between us.”

She stopped.

Then understood.

They were not biologically related.

Only connected through the family tree.

Luca took her hand.

“You are Elena.”

“Just Elena?”

“Just Elena.”

She smiled.

Then her father interrupted.

“There is one more thing.”

Elena sighed.

“Of course there is.”

He placed a second envelope on the table.

Inside was a letter from Antonio Delacroix.

To my daughter, Elena.

She read.

Antonio admitted that he had made terrible choices.

He had protected the trust not because of money but because he wanted his daughter to have a life outside the criminal world.

He had ordered Luca’s father to keep Elena hidden.

Then he wrote:

I knew Victor would eventually hunt her.

I also knew my grandson would be the one person who could protect her without wanting the trust.

Elena looked at Luca.

“He knew you.”

Luca nodded.

“He watched me growing up.”

The final line of the letter was:

When the girl arrives at your door, open your arms before you open the books.

Elena looked at Luca.

He smiled.

“That sounds like him.”

She laughed.

“You’re saying you had instructions to hug me?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I would’ve ignored them.”

She smiled.

“Even better.”

The truth had finally stopped hurting.

It was still complicated.

Still messy.

But no longer terrifying.

The family secrets didn’t control her anymore.

She did.

Months later, the Delacroix organization began changing.

Luca turned legitimate operations over to trusted managers.

Nightclubs became legal businesses.

Shipping companies passed audits.

Money was returned.

Victims were compensated.

The family name slowly changed.

Elena helped build the foundation.

She worked with women who had been trafficked, coerced, or threatened by criminal families.

She understood them.

Because she had been there.

One afternoon, a young woman arrived.

She had been forced into an arranged marriage by her own family.

Elena sat beside her.

“You’re safe.”

The woman cried.

“No one has ever said that to me.”

Elena smiled.

“I know the feeling.”

Luca watched from the doorway.

He didn’t interrupt.

He had learned something.

Elena didn’t need him to rescue her anymore.

She had become someone who rescued others.

That night, he found her in the office.

“You’re working late.”

“So are you.”

He leaned against the desk.

“You know, you’re supposed to be the one with less responsibility.”

She laughed.

“I’m your partner.”

He smiled.

“Partner?”

She looked at him.

“You heard me.”

His expression softened.

“I like that.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Then he took something from his pocket.

A small ring.

No diamonds.

No family crest.

Just silver.

Elena stared.

“You’re not proposing.”

“Not yet.”

She laughed.

“What is it?”

“A promise.”

“For what?”

“That I’ll never use what you inherited to decide what you deserve.”

Her eyes filled.

She touched the ring.

“Then I have a promise too.”

“What?”

“I’ll never let your past decide who you become.”

They kissed.

But somewhere across the city, someone watched them.

A man stood beside a dark window.

He held a photograph.

Elena.

Luca.

And a little boy.

The man smiled.

“Let’s see how long their happiness lasts.”
