Millionaire Cowboy Heard Them Laugh at Widow’s Old Dress—His Next Move Silenced Everyone
Chapter 6
Silas did not draw his pistol.
He did not need to.
He walked toward the sheriff and held out his hand.
“Your order.”
The sheriff hesitated.
Silas’s voice remained calm.
“Show it to me.”
The sheriff produced a paper.
Silas read it.
Then he laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was badly forged.
“This seal is wrong.”
The sheriff’s face changed.
Silas pointed.
“The county judge’s seal has three stars. This has four.”
The sheriff looked again.
One deputy stepped closer.
“I didn’t know.”
Silas folded the paper.
“Now you do.”
He handed it back.
“You have five minutes to leave this property.”
The sheriff stiffened.
“You can’t order me.”
“No.”
Silas looked toward the road.
“But I can make sure your actions are witnessed.”
Three riders appeared behind him.
Then three more.
Men who worked Silas’s farms.
The sheriff counted them.
He knew fighting would be foolish.
He mounted.
“This isn’t over.”
Silas nodded.
“I know.”
When they left, Margaret collapsed onto a chair.
Daniel ran to her.
Silas stood by the door.
Margaret looked at him.
“Why did Thomas trust you?”
Silas didn’t answer.
She held up the letter.
His expression changed.
“Where did you find that?”
“Under the floor.”
Silas took it.
He read the final sentence.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at Margaret.
“Your husband saved my life.”
She stared.
“When?”
“Five years before he died.”
Silas explained.
He had been traveling through the county when a bridge collapsed.
Thomas had pulled him from the river.
Afterward, Silas offered money.
Thomas refused.
Instead, he asked Silas to promise one thing.
“If you ever hear that my family is in danger, don’t wait for someone to ask you to help.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Thomas never wanted you to know how dangerous his work had become.”
She looked down.
“And now?”
Silas looked toward the darkening road.
“Now I think he knew this day would come.”
