Millionaire Cowboy Heard Them Laugh at Widow’s Old Dress—His Next Move Silenced Everyone
Chapter 5
That evening, Margaret found something hidden beneath the floorboards.
Daniel had been playing near the hearth when his wooden horse slipped between two boards.
Margaret knelt to retrieve it.
Her fingers touched something beneath the floor.
She pulled up the board.
A small iron box rested in the darkness.
Her heart began to pound.
The box was locked.
She remembered Thomas telling her once:
“If anything ever happens to me, don’t trust the obvious hiding place.”
At the time, she had laughed.
Now she didn’t.
She searched the bedroom.
Inside an old wooden chest, she found a key.
It fit.
Inside the iron box were letters.
Six of them.
All written by Thomas.
The first was dated two months before his death.
Margaret unfolded it.
Margaret,
If you are reading this, I have failed to settle this matter quietly.
There are men in this county changing land records.
Voss is not working alone.
Margaret’s hands shook.
She read the next line.
I found proof that our farm was purchased legally. The original record exists somewhere outside the county office.
I have hidden the copy where you will never think to look.
Margaret stared at the letter.
Daniel approached.
“Mother?”
She quickly folded it.
“Go outside, sweetheart.”
“But—”
“Please.”
Daniel obeyed.
Margaret read the final sentence.
Trust Silas Carter if you ever have no one else left.
She stopped breathing.
Why had Thomas written Silas’s name?
They had barely known each other.
Or so she had believed.
A knock came at the door.
Margaret froze.
Another knock.
Then a man’s voice.
“Mrs. Hale?”
The sheriff.
Margaret hid the letters.
“Yes?”
“We need to speak.”
She opened the door.
The sheriff stood there with two deputies.
“We have received new instructions.”
“From whom?”
“Mr. Voss.”
Margaret’s heart sank.
“What does he want?”
The sheriff looked uncomfortable.
“He wants the boy.”
Margaret went cold.
“Why?”
“He claims Daniel is not legally yours.”
For a moment, the world seemed silent.
Then Margaret slammed the door.
The sheriff shouted.
She grabbed Daniel.
“Run to the barn.”
“But Mother—”
“Now!”
She rushed toward the back door.
Before she could reach it, hoofbeats thundered outside.
A rider stopped in the yard.
Silas Carter.
He jumped from the saddle.
His eyes found Margaret.
“What happened?”
She whispered:
“They’re trying to take my son.”
Silas’s face became hard.
“Then they chose the wrong family.”
