Millionaire Cowboy Heard Them Laugh at Widow’s Old Dress—His Next Move Silenced Everyone
Chapter 11
The banker entered with two armed men.
Silas immediately stepped in front of Margaret.
The banker sighed.
“I hoped you would understand before this became unpleasant.”
Silas stared at him.
“You killed Thomas.”
“No.”
“Samuel?”
“No.”
“But you knew.”
The banker looked away.
“I knew enough.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Money.”
She shook her head.
“You ruined families for money.”
The banker frowned.
“You don’t understand how the world works.”
Margaret’s voice hardened.
“No. I understand exactly how it works.”
She held up the ledger.
“You believed poor people had no one to defend them.”
The banker laughed.
“And now you think Silas Carter will save everyone?”
Silas looked at Margaret.
“No.”
He turned toward the banker.
“She will.”
The banker raised his pistol.
Silas moved.
A shot struck the wall.
The room exploded into chaos.
Margaret grabbed the ledger.
Silas tackled one man.
The second attacked him with a knife.
Margaret struck the man’s wrist with the heavy ledger.
The knife fell.
They ran.
Outside, horses waited.
Silas helped Margaret into the carriage.
“Hold tight.”
The horses surged forward.
Gunshots echoed behind them.
Margaret clutched the ledger.
Silas drove through the narrow streets.
At last they escaped into the countryside.
When they stopped, Margaret looked at him.
“You could have been killed.”
“So could you.”
She shook her head.
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
They stared at each other.
Then Margaret kissed him.
It was brief.
Almost uncertain.
But when she pulled away, Silas touched her cheek.
“I’ve wanted to do that since the tavern.”
She smiled.
“You could have said something.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of losing you.”
