Robert had discovered a group of executives secretly transferring company assets into private accounts.
The leader was Adrian Blake.
But Adrian had not acted alone.
There were bankers.
Lawyers.
Executives.
And one member of Daniel’s own family.
Daniel read the name.
His uncle Michael.
The man who had raised Daniel after Robert’s supposed death.
The man who had managed the family estate.
The man who had told Daniel for twenty years that his father was dead.
Daniel’s hands shook.
“Michael.”
Victoria nodded.
“He knew.”
“Did he know about Emily?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Did he kill her?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian suddenly stopped struggling.
“You want the truth?”
Daniel looked at him.
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Emily found the original ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The one that proves who ordered everything.”
“Where is it?”
Adrian looked toward Victoria.
“She knows.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You do.”
Daniel turned to her.
Victoria swallowed.
“Emily hid it somewhere only Lily could access.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why Lily?”
“Because she knew everyone would search your office.”
Victoria pointed toward Lily’s backpack.
Lily looked frightened.
Daniel crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, did Mama give you something?”
Lily nodded.
She reached into her backpack.
A small silver key.
Daniel stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mama put it in my stuffed rabbit.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emily had prepared for this.
They found the ledger two hours later in a private storage unit registered under Emily’s maiden name.
Inside were years of transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Payments.
Bribes.
And one final entry.
Robert Carter — disappearance authorized.
Daniel stared at the page.
His father had not died.
He had been forced to disappear.
Michael had arranged it.
Daniel felt rage rise through him.
But Victoria placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t do anything reckless.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew all of this.”
“I knew pieces.”
“Why stay?”
She looked toward Lily.
“Because Emily asked me to.”
Daniel’s anger weakened.
Victoria whispered, “After she discovered the conspiracy, she knew she might not survive. She asked me to stay close to Lily.”
“Then why act cruelly toward her?”
Victoria looked down.
“Because they were watching.”
Daniel remembered Lily’s fear.
The locked room.
The hidden cameras.
The strange rules.
Victoria had been pretending to be cold.
Not because she hated Lily.
Because someone was monitoring them.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily ran into his arms.
