Little Girl’s Cry Echoed Through the Hall—Until Her CEO Father Saw What the Stepmom Hid

Chapter 3

The next morning, Daniel canceled every meeting.

That alone caused panic throughout Carter Technologies.

His executive assistant called three times.

The board chairman sent messages.

A major investor wanted an explanation.

Daniel ignored them all.

At 7:30 a.m., he sat in his study with the old phone connected to his laptop.

Lily sat nearby, drawing quietly.

Daniel had expected the phone to be dead.

It wasn’t.

There was one video.

Recorded six years earlier.

The screen showed Emily sitting in the same study.

She looked tired.

Not sick.

Afraid.

“Daniel,” she said into the camera, “if you’re watching this, something has happened that I couldn’t stop.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Emily continued.

“I started noticing withdrawals from the family account. Small amounts at first. Then larger ones. I asked the financial department about them, and they told me you approved them.”

Daniel frowned.

He had never approved them.

Emily glanced toward the door.

“I don’t know who is doing this. But someone knows our routines. Someone knows when you’re away. Someone knows when Lily is at school.”

Daniel’s hand tightened.

Emily reached for a folder.

“I put copies of everything here.”

She held up a small blue envelope.

Then the video froze.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That’s it?”

He checked the file.

It ended there.

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?”

“It’s okay.”

But it wasn’t.

Daniel called his chief security officer, Marcus Reed.

“Come to the house.”

Marcus arrived forty minutes later.

He watched the video twice.

Then he examined the wooden case.

“Where did you find this?” he asked Lily.

She pointed toward the hallway.

“The room at the end.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“The room that Victoria uses?”

Daniel nodded.

Victoria had converted Emily’s old storage room into a private dressing room.

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

Victoria had insisted on renovating it shortly after their wedding.

He had never questioned why.

Marcus opened the flash drive.

Files appeared.

Bank statements.

Property transfers.

Copies of emails.

And one document marked:

CARTER FAMILY TRUST — INTERNAL REVIEW

Daniel opened it.

A series of payments had been made from an account connected to his company.

But the money hadn’t gone to Victoria.

It had gone to three shell companies.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Someone has been moving money.”

Daniel nodded.

“How much?”

Marcus scrolled.

“Over the last eighteen months?”

He swallowed.

“Nearly eight million dollars.”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

She was still drawing.

Then he noticed what she was drawing.

Their house.

Three stick figures stood outside it.

Daniel.

Lily.

And Victoria.

But Lily had drawn Victoria with a large black circle around her.

“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.

Lily lowered her pencil.

“That’s where she told me never to go.”

She pointed to the basement.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.
