Little Girl’s Cry Echoed Through the Hall—Until Her CEO Father Saw What the Stepmom Hid

Chapter 10

Robert told the full story over the next several days.

He had survived the crash.

Michael had arranged for the wreckage to be identified as his.

Robert escaped with help from an old colleague and spent years gathering evidence.

Emily eventually found him.

Together, they built the ledger.

But the conspiracy was larger than either expected.

When Emily became ill, Robert disappeared again to keep Lily safe.

Victoria entered the family under Emily’s instructions.

Her job was simple.

Protect Lily.

Protect the evidence.

Wait for Daniel to become strong enough to confront the truth.

Daniel hated how much pain the plan had caused.

But he also understood why Emily had made it.

The people involved had resources.

Money.

Connections.

Information.

They could manipulate police reports and bank records.

They could watch the house.

They could make someone disappear.

But they had underestimated Lily.

The little girl had remembered everything.

Every strange rule.

Every hidden room.

Every time Victoria told her not to enter the basement.

Every night she had heard footsteps outside her door.

Daniel sat beside Lily’s bed one evening.

“Are you still scared?”

She shook her head.

“Not when you’re here.”

Daniel smiled.

“I’m always going to listen now.”

She looked at him.

“Even when I say something you don’t believe?”

“Especially then.”

She smiled.

Across the hallway, Victoria stood quietly.

Daniel walked toward her.

“I owe you an apology.”

Victoria shook her head.

“You don’t.”

“I blamed you.”

“You had every reason.”

“I didn’t.”

Victoria looked down.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“You were trying to protect Lily.”

“Yes.”

Daniel reached for her hand.

She hesitated.

Then accepted.

But before either could say more, Robert appeared.

“We found another name.”

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

Robert handed him a file.

Daniel opened it.

One name appeared on the first page.

Evelyn Carter.

Daniel frowned.

“My grandmother?”

Robert nodded.

“She wasn’t just your grandmother.”

“What was she?”

Robert looked toward the window.

“She was the person who started the trust.”

Daniel stared.

“The trust is still active.”

Robert nodded.

“And it contains something even more valuable than money.”

“What?”

Robert’s answer was quiet.

“Proof.”
