“I’m Just A Hired Girl,” She Sobbed — But The Rancher’s Children Begged Her Not To Leave

Chapter 12

They returned to Double Creek after dark.

Snow covered the roads.

The ranch house looked almost peaceful.

But Mara knew better.

They left the truck behind the barn and walked toward the old water tower.

Lucas carried a flashlight.

Samuel carried the shotgun.

Mara carried the USB drive.

They reached the tower.

The ground was frozen solid.

“Where?” Samuel asked.

Lucas pointed.

“Three feet from the base.”

They dug.

For twenty minutes.

Finally, the shovel struck metal.

Samuel pulled out a rusted box.

Inside was an old digital recorder.

He pressed the button.

His father’s voice filled the night.

“Samuel, if you’re hearing this, I failed to protect you.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Your mother and Caleb have been working with Walter Haines. They are stealing land from families across the county.”

Mara looked at Samuel.

His father’s voice shook.

“I tried to expose them.”

A pause.

“Caleb found out.”

Another pause.

“He came to me that night.”

Samuel whispered:

“Dad…”

The recording continued.

“We fought.”

Then a sound.

A struggle.

A door opening.

His father’s voice again:

“Evelyn, please.”

A woman’s voice answered.

“Give me the ledger.”

Samuel froze.

His mother’s voice.

His father refused.

Then came a crash.

The recording ended.

Mara stared at the recorder.

“That was it.”

“No.”

Samuel looked at her.

“There has to be more.”

Lucas pointed to the box.

There was a second recorder.

Samuel pressed play.

His father’s voice returned.

“I survived that night.”

Samuel’s eyes widened.

“They thought I was dead.”

Mara covered her mouth.

“I hid because I knew they would kill me.”

The voice continued.

“I left the ranch under the family trust.”

Samuel stared.

“And I left evidence.”

The recording became distorted.

Then one sentence came through clearly:

“The person who can save this family is not Samuel.”

A pause.

“It’s Lucas.”

Samuel looked at the young man.

His son stared back.

His father’s voice continued.

“Lucas was born into this family because Claire believed one day he would need to know the truth.”

Mara’s eyes filled.

Samuel whispered:

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

The recording answered.

“Because your mother threatened Claire.”

Then static.

Suddenly, headlights appeared beyond the trees.

Lucas turned.

“They’re here.”

Samuel shut off the recorder.

“Run.”

They raced toward the barn.

Three vehicles entered the ranch.

Men stepped out.

Walter Haines stood among them.

And beside him—

Caleb.

Samuel stopped.

For a moment, the brothers stared at each other.

Caleb smiled.

“You finally found the recordings.”

Samuel raised the shotgun.

“You killed Claire.”

Caleb shook his head.

“Your wife killed herself.”

“Liar.”

“She knew what was coming.”

Samuel took one step forward.

Caleb raised his gun.

“Put it down.”

Mara grabbed Samuel’s arm.

Walter stepped forward.

“You’ve lost.”

He held up a document.

“The ranch is mine.”

Samuel laughed.

“No.”

Walter frowned.

Samuel lifted the recorder.

“My father disagrees.”
