“I’m Just A Hired Girl,” She Sobbed — But The Rancher’s Children Begged Her Not To Leave

Chapter 11

Samuel pushed Lucas to the floor.

Mara dropped beside them.

Another bullet struck the wall.

“Stay down!”

Samuel crawled toward the door.

Mara grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“I need to see where they’re shooting from.”

“You’ll get killed.”

“I’ve spent twenty years letting people decide what happens to my family.”

He looked at her.

“Not anymore.”

They waited.

No third shot came.

Lucas crawled to the window.

“The truck is gone.”

Samuel looked outside.

A black pickup disappeared among the trees.

Lucas turned.

“They found us.”

Mara stared at the broken window.

“Then we need to know how.”

Lucas pointed to the table.

“My phone.”

It was gone.

Someone had taken it.

Samuel looked at Mara.

“Tracker?”

“Maybe.”

Lucas shook his head.

“They’ve been watching me for years.”

“Why?”

“Because they thought I had the documents.”

“What documents?”

Lucas looked at the wooden box.

“Everything your family buried.”

Samuel sat down.

“Tell me.”

Lucas hesitated.

Then he began.

His aunt had worked for Samuel’s father.

She discovered that several local banks were manipulating ranch loans, buying distressed land through shell companies, and transferring ownership before families understood what had happened.

Samuel’s father found out.

He tried to stop them.

That’s when Caleb disappeared.

That’s when Claire became frightened.

And that’s when Samuel’s mother became involved.

“She didn’t want your father to expose the scheme,” Lucas said.

“So she helped them.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

Samuel stared at the floor.

Mara touched his shoulder.

He looked at her.

For the first time, she saw the anger underneath his silence.

Not anger at his mother.

Anger at himself.

“I should have known.”

“You were betrayed,” Mara said.

“I trusted them.”

“That’s not a crime.”

Samuel looked at her.

“No.”

He took a breath.

“But trusting them cost my wife her life.”

Mara didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Because she didn’t know whether Claire’s death had truly been natural.

Lucas spoke quietly.

“Your wife wasn’t supposed to die.”

Samuel turned.

“What?”

“She found the documents.”

“Did someone kill her?”

Lucas nodded.

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“They poisoned her medication.”

Mara’s hand covered her mouth.

Samuel stared at Lucas.

“Who?”

Lucas looked toward the door.

“Caleb.”

Samuel stood.

The room seemed to shake.

“I’ll kill him.”

Mara grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“He killed Claire.”

“And if you kill him, you lose everything.”

Samuel stared at her.

Mara continued.

“You want justice?”

He nodded.

“Then survive long enough to get it.”

Silence.

Lucas opened the wooden box.

There was one final item.

A small USB drive.

“What’s this?”

Lucas looked at Samuel.

“Your father recorded a confession.”

“About what?”

“About the day Caleb disappeared.”

Samuel’s hand shook.

“Where is the recording?”

Lucas looked toward the ranch.

“Under the old water tower.”

Mara stared.

The same place from the first photograph.

Then Lucas said:

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“Your father didn’t die naturally either.”
