I rescued an abandoned dog off the street, and he ended up saving my life
CHAPTER 13
Two years later, Ethan’s house no longer felt empty.
Lily came by every Sunday.
Rachel visited from Dallas.
Tommy brought barbecue.
And Scout slept beside the fireplace.
Ethan had never wanted a family.
He had thought solitude was freedom.
Now he understood that sometimes freedom meant having people worth coming home to.
One evening, Ethan found Scout lying on the porch.
He sat beside him.
“Remember the highway?”
Scout lifted his head.
“I thought you were the saddest dog I’d ever seen.”
Scout looked at him.
“I was wrong.”
Ethan scratched behind his ear.
“You weren’t waiting for someone to rescue you.”
Scout rested his head against Ethan’s leg.
“You were waiting for someone to rescue.”
The sky turned orange above Texas.
The road stretched beyond the fields.
Ethan smiled.
He had brought home a stray dog because he couldn’t leave him behind.
But the truth was simpler.
Somewhere between the highway and that little farmhouse…
Scout had brought Ethan home too.
And Ethan finally understood something he had spent most of his life missing.
A home wasn’t four walls.
It wasn’t money.
It wasn’t even the place you were born.
Sometimes, home was simply the creature that waited for you at the door…
and the people who made you want to come back.
Scout closed his eyes.
Ethan rested a hand on his head.
Neither needed to say anything.
They had already saved each other.
And that was enough.
