I Protected My Drunk Boss From a Dangerous Night — Then She Looked at Me and Said, “I Remember Everything”

Chapter 5

Victoria’s house had never felt small.

That night, it felt enormous.

Ethan stood in the security room while Victoria reviewed the message.

“You should have more protection.”

“I do.”

“Not enough.”

She looked at him.

“Are you worried?”

“Yes.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled slightly.

“You’re not very good at pretending.”

“I’ve never tried.”

They stood close.

Victoria reached for his hand.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Always.”

She looked at him.

“You said you’d stay.”

“I meant it.”

Their eyes met.

Neither moved.

Then the security alarm sounded.

Ethan turned immediately.

“Stay here.”

He rushed toward the main entrance.

The cameras showed a shadow near the gate.

Security moved in.

A vehicle drove away.

Ethan followed on foot.

He reached the gate.

Nothing.

Then he found something.

A small device attached to the fence.

A listening transmitter.

Someone had been monitoring the property.

Ethan removed it.

Victoria came outside.

“How bad?”

“Someone has been listening.”

She stared.

“Inside my house?”

“From outside.”

“How long?”

“Unknown.”

She took a breath.

Ethan touched her shoulder.

“We’ll find them.”

She looked at him.

“You always say that.”

“Because I believe it.”

That night, Victoria refused to sleep alone.

Ethan stayed in the guest room.

At 2:00 a.m., she knocked on his door.

He opened it.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

She smiled nervously.

“I just couldn’t sleep.”

He nodded.

She stayed in the doorway.

“Can I stay here?”

Ethan stepped aside.

“Yes.”

She sat on the chair.

Neither spoke.

Then she said:

“I remember everything.”

He smiled.

“You’ve said that.”

“I want you to know I’m not confused.”

“I know.”

“I’m not drunk.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not saying it because I’m afraid.”

He looked at her.

“Why are you saying it?”

She answered:

“Because I care about you.”

Ethan sat beside her.

“I care about you too.”

“Then why are we pretending otherwise?”

He had no answer.

She leaned toward him.

He kissed her.

Gently.

Slowly.

They stopped.

Ethan looked at her.

“We have to be careful.”

“I know.”

“This is your company.”

“I know.”

“You’re my boss.”

“Not forever.”

He smiled.

She rested her forehead against his.

“I don’t want this to be about one night.”

“It isn’t.”

“Good.”

They agreed to keep their relationship private until the investigation ended.

But neither of them could pretend it wasn’t real anymore.
