I Protected My Drunk Boss From a Dangerous Night — Then She Looked at Me and Said, “I Remember Everything”
Chapter 2
Ethan knew he couldn’t outrun two vehicles indefinitely.
He needed witnesses.
Traffic.
Police.
Something that would make whoever was following them think twice.
He turned onto a busy avenue.
The SUV stayed behind.
Victoria looked increasingly frightened.
“What do they want?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are you sure they’re following us?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“You sound calm.”
“I am.”
“Are you?”
“Not really.”
She laughed nervously.
“You’re terrible at lying.”
He glanced at her.
“Stay with me.”
The police station was three minutes away.
Then one of the SUVs moved alongside them.
A man inside raised his phone.
Victoria recognized him.
“That’s David’s driver.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“David Mercer.”
“The investor?”
“Yes.”
“Why would his driver follow us?”
“I don’t know.”
The SUV suddenly accelerated.
It swerved in front of Ethan.
Ethan slammed the brakes.
Victoria lurched forward.
He caught the steering wheel.
The second SUV blocked the rear.
For a moment, they were trapped.
Then Ethan saw an opening.
A narrow side street.
He turned sharply.
The SUV tried to follow.
Ethan drove through a parking garage.
He knew it was a risk.
But the garage had multiple exits.
He took the second ramp.
The SUVs hesitated.
One followed.
The other didn’t.
Ethan emerged onto another street.
He immediately called security.
“Track my location.”
“What’s happening?”
“We have two vehicles following us.”
“Who?”
“Unknown.”
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“I know where we can go.”
“Where?”
“My old apartment.”
“How far?”
“Fifteen minutes.”
“Okay.”
She gave him the address.
The old building was in a quieter part of the city.
Ethan drove carefully.
No vehicles followed.
When they arrived, Victoria looked relieved.
They entered the building.
Her old apartment was empty.
She had kept it after moving into her house years earlier.
Ethan helped her inside.
She sat on the couch.
He poured water.
“Drink.”
She looked at him.
“You never listen to me.”
“I listen.”
“Not always.”
“That’s different.”
She smiled.
“You should sit.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re tired.”
“So are you.”
“Exactly.”
He sat in the chair opposite her.
She looked at him.
“Why do you stay?”
“Because you’re my boss.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
He waited.
“You’ve worked for me three years.”
“Yes.”
“You could work anywhere.”
“Probably.”
“Why here?”
He thought.
“Because I believe in what we’re building.”
She nodded.
“And if I wasn’t your boss?”
Ethan looked at her.
The question hung in the room.
He didn’t answer.
Victoria closed her eyes.
“You never answer personal questions.”
“Neither do you.”
She smiled.
“Maybe that’s why we work.”
She drifted toward sleep.
Ethan waited.
He stayed in the chair.
He didn’t touch her.
Didn’t move her.
Didn’t take advantage of her vulnerability.
He simply stayed awake.
At 3:20 a.m., he heard a sound outside.
A car door.
Then footsteps.
Ethan stood.
He moved toward the window.
Someone was outside.
He called security.
Then police.
Within minutes, officers arrived.
The person outside fled.
Victoria woke.
“What happened?”
“We’re safe.”
She stared at him.
“You stayed.”
“Yes.”
“All night?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him for a long moment.
“Thank you.”
Ethan nodded.
That was all.
The next morning, Victoria would remember much more than Ethan expected.
