I Picked Up My Best Friend After Her Breakup… Then She Asked, “Why Didn’t I Choose You?”

Chapter 13

On their thirtieth anniversary, Sarah found Ethan sitting alone on the porch.

He was holding an old photograph.

The same one from the restaurant.

She sat beside him.

“You kept it.”

“Of course.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

“You know something?”

“What?”

“I finally understand why I didn’t choose you sooner.”

Ethan smiled.

“Tell me.”

“Because I thought love had to feel like fireworks.”

“And?”

“You were home.”

He looked at her.

“That’s not very dramatic.”

“It is to me.”

She took his hand.

“I was looking for someone who made me feel excited.”

“And I made you feel safe.”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“But I eventually realized that home isn’t boring.”

Ethan squeezed her hand.

“It’s the place you can finally stop pretending.”

Sarah looked toward the yard.

Their grandchildren were playing outside.

Emma was laughing with them.

The house was full of noise.

Full of life.

Full of memories.

Ethan looked at Sarah.

“Would you choose me again?”

She turned toward him.

“Every time.”

He smiled.

“Even if you had to go through the breakup again?”

Sarah laughed.

“Absolutely not.”

“Fair.”

She kissed his cheek.

Then she whispered:

“But if I could change one thing…”

“What?”

“I’d choose you sooner.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I wouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I love the life we built.”

Sarah smiled.

“So do I.”

They sat together as the sun disappeared.

Thirty years earlier, Ethan had picked up his best friend from a restaurant after her relationship ended.

She had been heartbroken.

He had been terrified.

Neither knew that the drive home would eventually become the beginning of everything.

She had asked him one question that night.

Why didn’t I choose you?

Years later, she finally knew the answer.

She hadn’t chosen him because she wasn’t ready.

But when the moment finally came, she chose him freely.

And Ethan never forgot the lesson.

The best love story isn’t always about finding someone.

Sometimes it’s about finally seeing the person who never stopped standing beside you.
