Sarah almost deleted the email.
She didn’t.
She opened it.
Daniel explained that during the final months of their relationship, he had been offered a position in another state.
He had accepted it.
He hadn’t told Sarah because he knew she wouldn’t follow him.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
He admitted that he had intentionally pushed her away.
He wanted her to hate him because he believed she would eventually choose Ethan.
Sarah read the message twice.
Then she called Ethan.
“I need to see you.”
He arrived within twenty minutes.
She showed him the email.
Ethan read it silently.
“Why would he do that?”
“Because he thought he was helping me.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s not his decision.”
“I know.”
She sat down.
“What if he was right?”
“About what?”
“About me and you.”
Ethan sat beside her.
“He doesn’t get to decide that.”
Sarah looked at him.
“What do you decide?”
Ethan thought carefully.
“I decide that I love you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And?”
“And I don’t need you to love me because someone else convinced you.”
She looked at him.
“I need you to choose me because you want me.”
Sarah reached for his hand.
“I do.”
Ethan stared at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
She leaned closer.
“This time, I’m choosing.”
Their first kiss happened quietly.
No dramatic music.
No perfect sunset.
Just the two of them sitting on Sarah’s couch.
It was awkward for half a second.
Then it wasn’t.
When they pulled away, Sarah laughed.
“That was a long time coming.”
“Fifteen years.”
She smiled.
“You’re worth the wait.”
For the first time, Ethan allowed himself to believe this could actually work.
But relationships don’t become simple just because two people finally admit their feelings.
Sarah’s career was demanding.
Ethan’s company was expanding.
They had different routines.
Different expectations.
And Sarah still carried guilt from her relationship with Daniel.
