I Picked Up My Best Friend After Her Breakup… Then She Asked, “Why Didn’t I Choose You?”
Chapter 8
Ethan’s father recovered slowly.
The experience changed him.
It also changed Sarah.
She realized how fragile life could be.
How many years people wasted waiting.
How many things were left unsaid.
One evening, she asked Ethan:
“Do you regret waiting fifteen years?”
He looked at her.
“Sometimes.”
She nodded.
“Why?”
“Because I missed time.”
Sarah took his hand.
“But you didn’t miss us.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I found you.”
The wedding took place three months later.
It wasn’t extravagant.
It was held outdoors at Sarah’s parents’ home.
Their closest friends attended.
Daniel was not invited.
Neither of them felt it was necessary.
When Sarah walked down the aisle, Ethan forgot every word he’d prepared.
She reached him.
“Hi.”
He laughed.
“Hi.”
“You look nervous.”
“I am.”
“Good.”
They exchanged vows.
Sarah promised to choose him every day.
Ethan promised to never ask her to become smaller for him.
When they kissed, everyone applauded.
That night, after the guests left, Sarah and Ethan sat outside beneath the stars.
“Mrs. Cole.”
She smiled.
“That sounds strange.”
“Give it time.”
She rested her head on his shoulder.
“Do you remember what I asked you?”
“When?”
“After Daniel.”
Ethan smiled.
“You asked why you didn’t choose me.”
Sarah nodded.
“I think I know now.”
“Why?”
“Because I had to become the person who could.”
Ethan looked at her.
She continued.
“I thought choosing you meant admitting I had wasted years.”
“It doesn’t.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“It means those years brought me here.”
Ethan kissed her forehead.
“I’ll take that.”
She laughed.
Then she looked at him.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
The words still felt new.
Even though he had been waiting fifteen years to say them.
