“I Feel Sorry for the Man Who Marries Her,” He Said — By Autumn, He Was the One Saying the Vows

Chapter 7

By August, the wedding date was set.

October.

The autumn leaves would be turning gold.

Clara wanted a small ceremony.

Daniel wanted nothing extravagant.

But rumors spread.

People said Clara had trapped him.

Others claimed she wanted his inheritance.

Some said Daniel had lost his mind.

Clara pretended not to care.

But one night, Daniel found her crying beside the barn.

He approached quietly.

She laughed bitterly.

“You’re becoming stubborn.”

“I learned from you.”

She looked at him.

“What if they’re right?”

“About what?”

“That I don’t belong in your world.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“You think my world is better?”

She shrugged.

She looked at him.

“I was lonely too.”

“I know.”

He took her hand.

“You don’t have to become someone else to belong beside me.”

She leaned against his shoulder.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Then Daniel said something that made her smile.

“Besides, if you become agreeable, I’ll miss the woman I fell in love with.”

She laughed.

He kissed her forehead.
