“I Feel Sorry for the Man Who Marries Her,” He Said — By Autumn, He Was the One Saying the Vows

Chapter 11

October arrived.

The leaves turned gold.

The mornings smelled of wood smoke and frost.

Clara wore a simple ivory gown.

Nothing extravagant.

Daniel wore a dark coat.

The small church filled with family, neighbors, farmers, and friends.

When Clara entered, Daniel forgot everyone else.

She walked toward him slowly.

At the altar, she whispered:

“You’re staring.”

He smiled.

“I know.”

“You’ll make me nervous.”

“I’ve been nervous for months.”

She laughed softly.

The minister began.

Then came the vows.

Daniel took Clara’s hands.

“I once believed strength meant never needing anyone.”

Clara’s eyes softened.

“I was wrong.”

He continued.

“You taught me that love isn’t rescue. It isn’t ownership. It isn’t wealth.”

His voice shook.

“It’s choosing the same person every morning.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“I choose you.”

She whispered:

“I choose you too.”

Outside, autumn leaves blew across the churchyard.

Inside, the man who had once mocked the thought of marrying Clara Bennett became her husband.

Chapter 12

Marriage did not make Clara softer.

Daniel secretly loved that.

She still argued.

She still worked.

She still repaired fences when she could have hired someone.

Daniel still left muddy boots by the door.

They learned each other’s habits.

They learned patience.

They learned forgiveness.

Within a year, Clara’s farm prospered.

Daniel never took ownership of it.

He never asked.

Instead, they built something together.

Thomas eventually married a girl from the neighboring farm.

The Bennett house grew louder.

Happier.

Fuller.

One autumn evening, Daniel returned from town.

Clara was standing on the porch.

She wore the same faded blue dress from the tavern.

He smiled.

“You still have that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because it reminds me of something.”

“What?”

“The day you embarrassed yourself.”

Daniel laughed.

“I deserved that.”

“You did.”

He climbed the steps.

“Do you remember what I said?”

“Every word.”

He winced.

“I was a fool.”

“Yes.”

“And yet you married me.”

“Another mistake.”

He put his arm around her.

“Would you make it again?”

Clara smiled.

“Without hesitation.”
