Homeless man Inherited his Poor Grandmother’s Mountain House—Then Discovered a Secret Inside

Chapter 4

Daniel spent the rest of the day studying his grandfather’s maps.

The second vault appeared to be somewhere north of the property.

The location was marked near an abandoned mining town called Black Pine.

Daniel had heard of Black Pine.

It had once been a thriving mining community.

By the 1970s, it had become nearly deserted.

Today, only a handful of people lived there.

Daniel packed supplies.

Before leaving, he searched the underground room again.

Behind one of the filing cabinets, he found a hidden compartment.

Inside was a cassette tape.

He found an old player in the storage room.

The tape crackled.

Then his grandfather’s voice emerged.

Daniel had never heard his grandfather’s voice before.

“Margaret, if you are listening to this, I need you to understand something.”

There was a long pause.

“I found the documents.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“They aren’t military records.”

Daniel froze.

“They are financial records.”

His grandfather explained that the government story was a cover.

The plane had been carrying documents connected to a group of wealthy industrialists.

The men had been secretly buying land across the country through shell companies.

They were attempting to control natural resources, transportation routes, and entire communities.

But the documents revealed something far worse.

They had been manipulating land prices.

Destroying small businesses.

Forcing families off their property.

Then buying the land for almost nothing.

Daniel remembered his own collapse.

His company had been destroyed by a sudden contract cancellation.

He had always blamed himself.

But his grandfather’s words made him wonder.

Could the same network still exist?

The tape continued.

“One of these men is still alive.”

Daniel’s heart raced.

“He has spent decades searching for the documents.”

A pause.

“His name is…”

The tape cut out.

Daniel hit the player.

Nothing.

He rewound it.

The same thing.

The final name was missing.

He returned to the maps.

The route to Black Pine passed through a narrow mountain road.

Daniel walked for nearly six hours.

By sunset, he reached the abandoned town.

The place looked frozen in time.

Empty storefronts.

Broken windows.

An old church.

A gas station with rusted pumps.

Only one building appeared occupied.

A small diner.

Daniel entered.

An elderly woman looked up.

“You’re Margaret’s grandson.”

Daniel stopped.

“How do you know me?”

“Your grandmother told me you might come.”

“Who are you?”

“Eleanor.”

She placed a cup of coffee on the counter.

“Sit.”

Daniel sat.

“You knew my grandmother?”

“For fifty years.”

“Did you know my grandfather?”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

She looked toward the window.

“He found something that powerful people wanted buried.”

“Where is the second vault?”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You shouldn’t be asking that.”

“My grandmother left me the house.”

“That’s exactly why you should leave.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Why?”

Eleanor lowered her voice.

“Because people have been watching that property for decades.”

“Who?”

She looked around the empty diner.

Then whispered:

“People who don’t officially exist.”

Daniel felt a chill.

Eleanor reached beneath the counter.

She placed an old key in front of him.

“Your grandmother left this with me.”

Daniel picked it up.

“What does it open?”

“The second vault.”

“Where?”

Eleanor pointed toward the mountains.

“Old Black Pine Mine.”

Daniel looked at the key.

The mine had been abandoned for more than forty years.

“Why didn’t my grandmother go herself?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She did.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Daniel stared.

“My grandmother came here three months ago?”

“Yes.”

“But she was already sick.”

“She knew she didn’t have much time.”

“What happened?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“She went into the mine.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“With whom?”

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“Robert Miller.”

Daniel stood.

The lawyer had lied.

He hadn’t simply represented Margaret’s estate.

He had been part of the secret.

And three months before Margaret died, she had entered the mine with him.

Daniel suddenly understood why Robert had been so desperate to know whether Daniel had found the underground room.

The real secret wasn’t beneath the house.

It was inside the mountain.
